Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 11 March

Next Wednesday, 11 March, we will be treated to a talk by Gary Nicholls called The Imaginarium - Reality is for People without Imagination
The talk is designed to inspire the audience to try new ideas and ignore convention in creating a personal project using the camera as a tool to create Fine Art images from imagination to realisation.
  • What is Fine Art Photography? – Artists Vision, the ideas, techniques, body of work and artist statement - the talk helps you understand what is required – told in an entertaining way.
  • Photoshop techniques I use to create my work and how to achieve your own style and workflow
  • The How and Why – what are you going to shoot, how are you going to shoot it and why are you shooting it
  • Studio setups I use and why
  • If it can be dreamt, it can be created. ‘Reality is for people without Imagination’ and Gary’s imagination has no bounds, no journey impossible, no step is a step too far, darkness the order of the day.

Gary is the creator and author of The Imaginarium Trilogy—a 450 image fine art story, telling an intricate, fantastical, dark but ultimately beautiful steampunk story through the unique medium of fine art images. So far, eight years in the making, ‘The Imaginarium’ really is unique; telling a complex story in Fine Art Images that has not really been seen since the days of Hogarth and ‘Rakes Progress’
The final section of the talk goes through the photoshop and lighting techniques used, finishing up with some handy tips on skin retouching and detail enhancement.

This is a talk that should have our Chairman in a heightened state of over excitement, not good at his age! (Ed) To see a bit more about Gary, please visit his website

DI Group
The DI meeting scheduled for next Monday, 9 March, will go ahead as planned. All members are invited to attend either to see what others have brought to present or bring along images to show what you have been doing or ask for comments and advice on your images from fellow members. You may bring prints or images on a USB flash drive (in jpg format, sRGB colour space, any size in a folder of your name please).
If there is time at towards the end I am hoping to show a few of my straight images fresh from Venice carnival. Before you recoil in terror at the thought of coming anywhere near someone coming from Venice in the current health scare I would like to reassure you that Venice is not a locked down city nor have I had any flu symptoms. As an added precaution I will have kept myself away from people and BPS for at least two weeks. So I hope I won’t be there alone munching away all the biscuits !

Coronavirus!

This is for those of you who are a becoming concerned that several members of BPS have recently visited Northern Italy. You might find that this do it yourself facemask (shown on the left) could be a bit more effective than the flimsy white ones many people are now wearing!

Exhibitions to Visit
Royal Photographic Society’s International Photography Exhibition, the world’s longest running photography exhibition, is being held at RPS House at Paintworks, Brislington. The exhibition is on until 27 March - free entry. Full details here.

LACOCK Abbey - There is an exhibition of photographs at Lacock Abbey: 'Adornments' by Carla van de Puttelaar. This exhibition is one which exhibits photographs that are inspired by the paintings by the Dutch Old Masters and (as reported by several BPS members who have already seen it) is well worth a visit.
The exhibition is open until 12 July and more details can be found by following this link.
Thanks to Mike Salter for this.

The National Museum Cardiff following exhibition is being held at the museum:
  • Martin Parr in Wales: Until 4 May

Full details on the Museum website.

Arnolfini - Bristol
Zanjir – Amak Mahmoodian
Until Sunday, 22 March, 11:00 to 18:00
Open Tuesday - Sunday, closed on Mondays.
Free

Amak Mahmoodian’s Zanjir (Translation: “chain”) presents a body of photographs that cross great distances – reaching through history to bring the earliest images of Iranian photography into the present, across oceans to invite Mahmoodian’s family and friends; and across the border between life and death.
Full details here.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year
Wildlife Photographer of the Year – the world-renowned exhibition from the Natural History Museum – is back at M-Shed until 4 May with 100 new images. Now in its 55th year, Wildlife Photographer of the Year presents the most arresting and spectacular photography of our natural world. Encounter the beauty and fragility of wildlife, see fascinating animal behaviour and get to know extraordinary species. You’ll discover the surprising – and often challenging – stories behind the images during a time of environmental crisis.
Wildlife Photographer of the Year is the most prestigious photography event of its kind showcasing the world’s most astonishing sights for more than 50 years. Launching in 1965 and attracting 361 entries, today the competition receives 48,000 entries from 100 countries.
Full details here.

It's worth reading the following from John Hudson:

I, like many, have been to this exhibition every year for I know not how long. I have been jaded to the point of thinking of it as a duty rather than a pleasure - especially in recent years when the "arty"-ness of the print was given more credit than its technical merit or content.

This year is different, back to good standards and some great images. I was pleasantly surprised and urge people to go along.

Exhibition to Enter
I have received the following from past member of BPS, Greg Duncan. As Greg provides the software (and software support) for the Bristol Salon for free, I thought it only fair to reproduce his email:

Can I ask you please to let the Bristol club members know that we are offering Bristol Club Members a group discount. Because of our relationship to Bristol, we are not requiring a minimum number of entrants from Bristol - instead we are offering a 20% discount for all members.

Dorset Dragons ( https://www.kenebec.com/wyvern ) is fully PSA recognized (2020-009) and consists of 8 sections. We give out over 130 awards (actual medals and real ribbons).

The salon closes on 2 April.

We have assigned group code GS5598

When your members enter, please make sure they click YES to being part of group and that they enter the group code shown above. When they get to the end of the entry process, they should then click on PAY LATER.  When all of the members have entered, we can then arrange for one group payment.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Looking forward to hearing from you

Greg (Duncan)

Trumpet Blower's Corner
Not content with a double page spread in PAGB eNews (see above item to download), Mike Martin has seen a flurry of results from international photographic salons over the last week:
A total of 37 acceptances, including 1 Gold medal, 3 highly commended spread across Israel, Bulgaria, Serbia, Austria - must be costing him a fortune!

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

For Sale
If you have anything to sell, or you're looking for something to buy, just let me know and I'll include it here. Please bear in mind, we only advertise items for BPS members.
