Wednesday 26 October

Next week sees a visit to BPS by well-known photographer, Barbie Lindsay MPAGB FBPE AWPF EFIAP/s, who will be presenting her talk Creative and Beyond.

Barbie is a passionate photographer who enjoys every aspect of this fabulous medium.
One of her loves is Creative Photography. This can be done in camera as well as using various softwares to alter reality after the initial taking of the image.
So the talk will cover all types, which should inspire beginners and professionals alike. Barbie will not only be showing many award-winning images but will also tell you how they were created and what inspired her to take the photographs, along with a few tips on how to improve your photography. Barbie is also a fan of humorous pictures so there will be a smattering of fun pictures too. It is not the equipment that is important but the operator using the equipment, and the best camera is the one you have at the time and that includes a phone camera.

So it should be a fun as well as an informative evening - one definitely not to miss.

External Competitions
The following is from External Competitions Secretary, Mike Martin:

PAGB Inter Club PRINT championship – Saturday 22 October
It is good to see a welcome return of this print competition. Sadly it is an in-person event and not being broadcast via Zoom. Mike Martin and Ralph Snook are making the journey North to Blackburn with a pile of prints so please cross your fingers for them. If anyone else is in the North and fancies your own trip, tickets are still on sale via the PAGB website, until 21 October.

PSA competitions
The PSA interclub print and PDI competitions kick off with Round 1, the closing date being 15 November. Following last year’s success we have some momentum to keep up. So, watch for emails from Mike Martin asking for PDIs/prints or notifying authors which images he’s selected to represent the club.

Fire Alarm
This is just to let you know that at some time over the next few weeks, we will be holding a fire alarm test. It is a requirement of the local fire authority and our insurance company that we do this, it will involve the sounding of the fire alarm during a meeting and the evacuation of the clubroom.

It will not be a cause for panic and will require members to file out of the building, through the front door and to assemble in the Wex car park across the road. We will endeavour to do this on an evening when the weather is fine.

Clean Air Zone
Members who live south of the river will probably already be more than aware that on 28 November this year, the City Council is introducing a Clean Air Zone. This is going to mean that for those of you with older vehicles, you are going to have to find a new route to club.

If you haven't already done it, you can check if your vehicle will be affected by following this link.

Below is a map showing the zone and BPS in relation to the Zone.

Judge Required
Following on from last week's email asking for volunteer judges to help the Round Table with their annual Young Photographer Competition, I'm pleased to report that at least three members stepped up to the plate and have offered their help - many thanks.

3rd Country Of Heaven Photo Circuit 2022
It was great to see that 22 members followed last week's link to this exhibition. What will be even better will be if those members are successful and that they spread their success with me so that I can put it in the newsletter.

I have received the following:

African photography exhibition - Afrika Eye Festival

Hi Bristol Photographic Society,

I work for Afrika Eye, Bristol’s biggest festival celebrating African arts, film and music. This is our 16th year and we’re running a photography evening in the Graffiti Room at Trinity Centre that we'd love to share with your members :)

On 15 November at 6pm, we have an amazing photography exhibition called More Than A Number featuring 12 photographers from Africa curated by Cynthia Sitei (Creative Director of Ffotogallery, Wales). The evening will give people the chance to discuss how creatives portray African identities with one of the exhibit’s photographers, Professor Shawn Sobers (UWE Head of Photography) and photography students from Boomsatsuma.

Tickets are £5 - hope some of you can join us.

There’s more info on our website: afrikaeye.org.uk/programme

Please let me know if you have any questions! You can contact me using the email below.

Best wishes,
Niquita Munowenyu
