Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 9 February

Next Wednesday we have a talk by Alan Waterman intriguingly called Box Brownie to Book.

This is what Alan says of his talk:
The presentation is titled ‘Box Brownie to Book’ and basically it charts my progress through early cameras, photo albums, setting up The East Anglian Field Study Centre, the purchase and management of a small wood, the setting up of blogs, web sites and eventually to getting a book published (not self-published) in May 2021.
The book is titled Woodland Wild Flowers (through the seasons) so obviously the content of the talk will feature techniques to find and photograph flowers. It also features the setting up of blogs and websites using WordPress and ends up with the publishing process, finding a publisher (Merlin Unwin of Ludlow) and all that is entailed in putting a book together.
I am a member of the Forest of Dean Camera Club and have been for about 8 years. For most of my career I ran a Field Study Centre in Norfolk which I originally set up.

Zoom - Quality Issues - 2 Feb
During this week’s Hybrid meeting it was noticed that some members joining the meeting via Zoom may have experienced poor viewing quality. We were aware that there was a noticeable lag on the videos, which were played directly from the speaker's own laptop. Unfortunately, there are many factors at play here, such as Zoom restrictions/data centre processing, the speaker's laptop graphics/CPU processer speeds, Wi-Fi connection speeds etc. - What can be confirmed is that there were no issues with our internet connection during the meeting as we had speeds of 370MB/s download and 40MB/s upload. It is a known problem that Zoom is not the best at handling videos at consistent quality, particularly the vast amount that the speaker showed on Wednesday, and it is a bit hit and miss as some are fine whereas others not, this is due in no small part to the many variables that are outside of our control.

Additionally, at the start of the meeting, some will have noticed that there were some sound issues through Zoom, this later turned out to be cuased by feedback from the speaker's laptop even though the sound speakers were turned off and the Zoom Mic turned off – it took a while to find and turn off the internal microphone, but this was sorted fairly early in the proceedings. This was particularly annoying as it had not been a problem during the test run that we did before the meeting.

Hopefully these problems didn't spoil your enjoyment of the evening too much.

Arena Seminar
ARENA SEMINAR.. 5th to 6th March 2022
I included details of the upcoming Arena Seminar in the December issues of the newsletter, this is just a reminder, revcieved today from the organisers:

Some of your members may already be aware (or not) of the outstanding reputation of the Arena Seminar which has been running in the South of England for 30 years, most recently at the Riviera Hotel in Bournemouth. The recent further easing of restrictions by the Government allows the Seminar to take place again over the 5th to 6th March this year. There are still a few places available for photographers to attend and be inspired by presentations from world-renowned photographers. These are:
Kieran Doherty; renowned photojournalist of Wars, Tsunamis and Wimbledon! World Press Award.
Lucinda Grange; climber and award-winning adventure photographer.
Marianthi Lainas; seascapes and mixed media; crafter of hand-made books.
Andrew Testa; freelance photographer published by premier newspapers and magazines. World Press Award.
Arena members Edward (Ted) Sturgeon and Paul Mitchell.
On Saturday evening we host the print walk - an opportunity for delegates to show their work too, and the weekend closes with a free print raffle of pictures presented by Arena members.
We are limiting attendance to Covid-safe numbers and working closely with the Hotel to keep some sensible precautions in place including extra spacing in the Conference room and plentiful hand sanitising stations etc. We also hope attenders will be cautious, vaccinated and boosted and if possible, tested before you join us.
You can come as a day visitor either Saturday or Sunday or join us for the whole weekend. Either way you will find a friendly, convivial, and inspiring weekend.

Trumpet Bowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue

Items For Sale
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
