PRESS INVITE: ANC Youth League protesting today at Woolworths Headquarters (Today, Monday 29 Sept, 12-2pm in Cape Town)
Today (Monday 29 September) between 12pm and 2pm the ANC Youth League will be holding a protest at the headquarters of Woolworths (93 Long Market Street, Cape Town). All members of the media are invited.
Today's protest is part of the larger #BoycottWoolworths campaign led by BDS South Africa, the National Coalition 4 Palestine and others who are calling on Woolworths to terminate its trade relations with Israel until Israel ends its violations of international law. The call for Woolworths to end its Israeli trade links is in line with the international boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel campaign.
The ANC Youth League protest will take place just two days after the recent successful National Day of Action against Woolworths which took place on Saturday 27 September and resulted in various Woolworths stores coming to a standstill and some even shutting down. The Management of Woolworths at several stores, in anticipation of the monthly National Day of Action (which takes place on the last Saturday of every month) hired private bouncers to counter and try to suppress protest actions. The violent response by Woolworths and its hired bouncers, instead of quietening the peaceful protestors and non-violent protest actions, had the opposite effect of causing massive disturbances at malls and shopping centers. The heavy handed response of Woolworths was condemned by BDS South Africa.
To date, the Directors of Woolworths have refused to meet with BDS South Africa and other organizers of the #BoycottWoolworths campaign who would like to engage and resolve this issue. The unwillingness of Woolworths to meet with #BoycottWoolworths organizers have lead to them intensifying their campaign against the retailer.
