Do Cats Like Kisses?

Some cats do seem to like or at least tolerate human kisses. If your cat leans in, purrs, and rubs his head on you when you kiss him, he probably understands that you're trying to show him affection.

However, if your cat's ears go back, he begins to whip his tail back and forth, moves away from you, hisses, or swats at you, he doesn't want to be kissed. [It's a good idea to respect that!]

1. Dogs and Cats Rescued near Kyiv, Ukraine

A 77-year old Ukrainian woman saved 100 cats and nearly 700 dogs abandoned in the war-torn nation. As shelling continued and Russian soldiers invaded the rag-tag shelter north of Kyiv, Asya Serpinska and her staff of three defied the combatants to protect the beloved  animals.

4. Is Your Cat Your Alarm Clock?

If your cat wakes you before you're ready to get up, here are some helpful bits of information.

Cats are persistent; we know that! When you close your bedroom door, a cat that is bent on getting you to open up will stand on the other side for as many hours as it takes to guilt you into submission.

But what drives that perseverance?

A couple of years ago, there was an interesting article on how cats came to live among us. This piece explained that cats decided to “domesticate themselves” to enter human villages looking to escape their predators. When people noticed that cats kept all kinds of vermin at bay, it became obvious both sides stood much to gain from continuing the arrangement.

5. How to Discipline a Cat

"To get started on the right foot, it's important to know the do's and don'ts of how to discipline a cat in your home. Once your kitten — or older cat — understands what behavior is appropriate, there will be less need for correcting bad behaviors. After all, cats are very smart."

Pay special attention to the paragraph about using a spray bottle! (Hint: It doesn't accomplish what you think.)

6. Are Laser Pointers Bad For Cats?

Most people don't realize that their cat can become frustrated with this toy because they can never capture the dot!

Cats have predatory instincts and always missing their prey could eventually lead to loss of interest in the activity. My suggestion is to land the dot on a toy they can pounce on, satisfying their prey drive with a "capture."

Another risk is accidental visual exposure to the laser light causing permanent eye damage.

Read this to learn how to play with your cat without the risks or the frustration of not catching the red dot:

7.  Ginger Cats

Orange tabby cats, also known as marmalade or ginger, are one of the most popular types of cats requested by adopters.

What exactly gives them that beautiful coat? What type of personality do they have? And are they mostly male?

8. Crisis of veterinary care

From The Humane Society of the United States

In 2021, there were more than 18 openings for every veterinarian seeking a job and nearly six for every veterinary technician or assistant. A study published this year estimates the U.S. will be short 15,000 veterinarians by 2030. How can our field survive this?
