2 Samuel 11:1 At the time when kings go out to battle, . . . David remained at Jerusalem.

JESUS AS RIGHTEOUS KING

David faced countless foes on and off the battlefield. As a boy there were the wild foes. Of them David said to Saul: "The Lord, who delivered me from the paw of the lion an from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of [Goliath]" (1 Sam 17:37).

As a man there were the enemy armies. Here too David kept his eyes on the Lord for deliverance. "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? Though an army should encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war should rise against me, in this I will be confident" (Psalm 27:1, 3).

But there was that one day when David stayed home from the battlefield, and his eyes fell on Bathsheba next door. From the roof he saw a woman bathing, and the woman was very beautiful to behold (2 Samuel 11:2). David proceeded to walk according to the desires of his sinful flesh, and before the year was out, had not only committed adultery but also murder.

How blessed it is for us that the Lord does not take His protective eyes off of us for even a millisecond! "Behold, the eye of the Lord is on those who fear Him, on those who hope in His mercy" (Psalm 33:18).

Jesus did not let down His guard even for a moment when on this earth. He never fell into sin Himself. As a result, Jesus is able to be the King we need -- a King in whom every believer can rely for protection and deliverance from this world of sin!
