Hello Firstname

Wednesday 23 October
Next Wednesday we are being treated to an evening of audio visuals by Howard Bagshaw ARPS MPAGB with his talk entitled Exploring AV. Howard is Vice Chairman of the RPS Audio Visual Group and is recognised as an expert in the field of AV. I can't lead you to any of his AVs but if you follow this link you will see examples of Howard's work.

Photo Honours
Could you please check the photo honours (if, unlike me, you have any) that are shown against your name at the top of this newsletter. If they are incorrect or need updating, please email Carol at secretary@bristolphoto.org.uk

Print Competition Round 1
Last Wednesday was Round 1 of this year's Print Competition series. Our Print Competition Secretaries were unfortunately confined to their sick beds, so thanks to Margaret Collis for stepping in at the last minute to act as MC for the evening (obviously, in more ways than one!). Our judge for the evening was Peter Gennard MFIAP EFIAP/p from the Midlands whose style was both constructive and entertaining and who, by his own admission, lived up to his nickname of "Chopper Gennard". Overall a thoroughly entertaining evening and I don't think many would disagree with his final choices. The results are shown below:

A Tip For Filling Out Exhibition Entry Forms
For those of you who enter lots of exhibitions and at times suffer from "Knackered Finger Condition" (KFC), Greg Duncan has put together a simple set of instructions for getting titles from your image folder and into your entry form without straining your typing finger. Full instructions can be found by clicking on this link (after which you can rest your weary digit!)

PAGB e-News - 100 Photo Special
To download the latest edition of the PAGB e-News, just follow this link. This is a picture Special to celebrate 100 issues.  It may be slow to download as it is fairly large, but it will be worth the wait! What could make the wait even more worthwhile is that two of the images are by BPS members, Keith Wood and Barry Mead.

RHS Photographic Competition 2013
With the closing date for this year’s RHS Photographic Competition fast approaching, they’re having one last push to remind photographers to get their entries in before Friday 1st November to be in with a chance of winning the coveted title of RHS Photographer of the Year 2013 and the top prize of £1000.
According to judge and professional garden photographer Clive Nichols, ‘shooting at dawn in the autumn is the perfect time to take pictures outdoors as flowers and foliage will still be decorated with dew and cobwebs which can make for some striking images.’  Now that we are in the midst of autumn it’s the perfect time to get outside and capture some truly spectacular shots.
Full details of the competition including the entry form can be found on their website: www.rhs.org.uk/photocomp.

So, come on all you members who try to convince me that you spend every waking hour in your gardens, or trolling around the gardens of the Southwest, enter and let's see a BPS name on the RHS honours board!

Exhibitions to Visit
Bristol Festival of Literature is on from 19 to 27 October at various venues throughout the city. Of particular interest to BPS members will be an exhibition being held at The Parlour, 31 College Green, BS1 by our esteemed Chairman, Neil McCoubrey ARPS and local photographer, Paul Bullivant. The exhibition is called See it my way and includes a "conversation evening" on Monday 21st between 8 and 9pm. All are welcome and a little bird tells me that there might be some wine on offer. You will be able to find full details of the Festival by visiting their website at www.unputdownable.org

There is an exhibition on at present at the RWA in Queens Rd called Bristol and Somerset: Vanishing Lives, this is an exhibition of 150 of Reece Winston's prints depicting Bristol and Somerset between 1930 and the mid 1960s and is on until 13 November. Admission is free. Full details on the RWA website

Photographers' Workshop - Andy Beale
We have received the following email from Andy Beel at Kingswood PS offering photography workshops. Full details are contained in Andy's email and the enclosed links:

I have recently introduced Pixels to Print Workshops for camera clubs and photographic societies.
Just to whet your appetite the benefits of the new two day workshops are:
On day 1 we will spend a day taking pictures near you. Participants will discover the secret of knowing how your pictures will look artistically and technically before you press the camera shutter release with the ABC of CameraWork.
On day 2 I share and demonstrate my personal settings in CS6 and Lightroom 5. Acquire simple but effective skills to make your pictures look like they have been made by a master photographer.

The full workshop details are on my website at www.andybeelfrps.co.uk/Pixels to Print Workshops

Thanks & Regards

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Well done to Andrew Marker who gained his Associateship of the Royal Photographic Society (ARPS) this week - Congratulations. I've reproduced Andrew's successful panel below; the individual images are a bit small, but I'm sure we can persuade him to display them in the clubrooms before too long. All the images were taken at the Venice Carnival and are presented as 125mm square prints on 500 x 400mm mounts which just goes to show that big is not always better.

Barry Mead got a FIAP Silver medal in the recent Tallaght International Salon of Photographic Art and a Ribbon in the Welsh International Salon

If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
