HOMEWORK FOR 9/20:
PÄRT:   pp. 16-26.  Please read the Russian in rhythm. There’s a key “For English speakers” in the introduction to the score.  It’s better to think of “a” as in “call,” not “master.”

LAURIDSEN:  I and II

ADAM’S LAMENT:  Attached is a guide showing how the English translation fits in with the music.  Please write it in above the music.  THIS IS IMPORTANT!  Let’s know what we are singing!

BACKGROUND OF ADAM’S LAMENT
The author of the poem, St. Silouan the Athonite (1866–1938), was an Eastern Orthodox monk of Russian origin.  At the age of twenty-seven, after a period of military service, he left his native Russia and came to the monastic state of Mt. Athos, a Greek peninsula, where he became a monk at the Monastery of St Panteleimon, an Orthodox monastery that houses Russian monks yet is, as all the Athonite monasteries, under the jurisdiction of the Patriarch of Constantinople.  An ardent ascetic, he received the grace of unceasing prayer and saw Christ in a vision. After long years of spiritual trial, he acquired great humility and inner stillness. He prayed and wept for the whole world as for himself, and he put the highest value on love for enemies.  The composer, Arvo Pärt, has been reported to say that the fallen Adam of the work represents "humankind in its entirety and each individual person alike, irrespective of time, epochs, social strata and confession.”

Please make a note of the additional (optional) rehearsal that was not in the original schedule, on Wednesday December 20.  Also hope you’ll attend our welcome (dish-to-pass) reception for new and returning members on Wednesday September 20 at 6:30.

CHECK YOUR FOLDERS!

Someone accidentally picked up Cullie Mowers music folder at Wednesday night’s rehearsal.  If you have it, please call Cullie at 539-6527.

Ad Sales for ACI Program Shell

Please Sell an Ad!

One of the important ways that chorus members of ICC&CS, VOICES, and IGMC help raise money to cover concert costs is to get businesses to buy an ad in the ACI program shell.  We can all be grateful to the members of ICC&CS who sold ads last year, many of whom have signed up to do so again this year.  BUT not all businesses that bought last year will do so this year:  more people must sign up to sell ads if we are going to match, let alone exceed last year’s success.

The process is very simple: pick up the materials from me at next Wednesday’s rehearsal and follow the step-by-step instructions (the necessary forms and instructions are also attached to this newsletter).  You then go to a business you think could/should advertise, sign it up, and make sure it sends in the agreement form, the check, and the ad.  If just ten people sign up and each sells a $100 ad, ACI makes $1000.  Actually, those additional ten people will probably make more money, because businesses often buy larger ads.

Ad prices are remarkably affordable (see the list below), so you shouldn’t feel shy about approaching a business.  The ACI program shell reaches over 2000 audience members at six concerts—an ad is an excellent buy.

Ad prices:

Inside Front Cover (7” wide x 10” high) $350
Full Page (7” wide x 10” high) $320
Half Page (7.5” wide x 5.00” high) $200
Quarter Page (3.75” wide x 4.3” high) $145
Eighth Page (3.5” wide x 2” high) $100

Please get in touch with me at kkg1@cornell.edu if you have questions.

See you at rehearsal!

Fall Workshop

Sounds of Singing: Extending Choral Traditions
September 23, 2017
10:00 – 12:30, with registration and coffee at 9:30 and a midway break
Unitarian Annex, 208 E. Buffalo St.

$20 fee benefits all four projects of the Affiliated Choruses of Ithaca (formerly Ithaca Community Choruses)

We are the musical products of our backgrounds and experiences, which provide rich resources for our music-making.  Looking outside our own traditions can broaden these resources musically and culturally, even if we move outside our comfort zones.  In this workshop, let’s sing together, share some musical experiences, expand our palettes, and perhaps find insights in traditions new to us.  We’ll explore vocal techniques, ensemble practices, and a diverse repertoire of choral music.

Sean Linfors, Ph.D, is Assistant Professor of Choral Music Education Ithaca College where he directs the IC Chorus and Madrigal Ensemble. He is an educator, conductor, and clinician, and, prior to moving to New York, he worked with ensembles in Virginia and Florida. Very active in the American Choral Directors Association, Sean has conducted community, church, and university choral groups in traditional and contemporary music. He is one of the directors of the fledgling community Justice Choir Ithaca.
2018 Commencement Weekend: ICC&CS Bed & Breakfast

The Chorus has been hosting families of Cornell University’s graduating students for about 25 years. It’s a service that visiting families really appreciate, and it’s also a relatively painless way to raise funds for the Chorus.

Memorial Day weekend is always Cornell’s Commencement weekend. Cornell posts not-for-profit organizations that host families for B&B during Commencement weekend. Potential guests give us details of their needs – then we match them with a host family. The finances are handled by the ICC coordinator. Your cost of hosting (food, etc) is tax deductible.

I know – it’s difficult to commit to hosting this far away from Memorial Day! Do you have an available guest bedroom? One meets many delightful people who are thrilled to be staying in a home close to campus. The financial benefits to the Chorus are very much appreciated. Do contact me if you’d like more information about hosting.
