MIKE CHEN Here and Now and Then
Thursday, February 7th at 7 PM
In what Publisher’s Weekly calls a “heartfelt and thrilling debut,” Mike Chen writes of Kin Stuart, a time travelling agent of the TCB — the Temporal Corruption Bureau. Sent on assignment from San Francisco circa 2142, Stuart finds himself stranded in 1996. After waiting futilely for rescue, against all protocols, he eventually builds a life with a wife and daughter. And then they show up, eighteen years later.
Chen has all kinds of fun with sci-fi tropes and world building, but at its heart, this is a novel about a father’s love for his child. Please join us in welcoming Mike Chen, the newest member of the Bay Area literati.

CHRISTOPHER CASTELLANI & DAVID THOMSON Leading Men & Sleeping with Strangers: How Movies Shaped Desire
Monday, February 25th at 7 PM
We are thrilled to welcome authors David Thomson and Christopher Castellani to BookShop West Portal for what will, no doubt, be a fascinating evening. David is the author of more than 20 books on film and television, and was called by the Atlantic Monthly "probably the greatest living film critic and historian." His latest book is Sleeping with Strangers: How the Movies Shaped Desire, a look at how films have impacted us culturally, from our social and sexual mores up through the #MeToo movement of today. Christopher Castellani is the author of Leading Men. To quote Publisher's Weekly, "Castellani's spectacular fourth novel imagines the relationships between Tennessee Williams, his lover Frank Merlo, and a young actress named Anja Bloom, whom they take under their wing." Set largely in the 50s and 60s, Christopher's tale delves with both well-researched fact and a healthy dose of fiction into both Hollywood and the theatrical world of the past. We've got an expert on storytelling, and an expert storyteller. This conversation is going to be great!

MARY BURNS The Love for Three Oranges
Thursday, February 28TH at 7 PM
West Portal favorite Mary Burns is back with her latest John Singer Sargent/Violet Paget mystery! Sure, Sargent made his name as a painter and Paget was better known by her pen name, Vernon Lee, but these dear friends always seem to find themselves enmeshed in mystery. This is the pair’s second outing, set two years after the events of The Spoils of Avalon. And this time they’re off to atmospheric Venice in the last, dwindling days of 1879. Set across four short days, The Love for Three Oranges is a fast-paced treat for fans of historic fiction and the arts.
