We find ourselves off to a slow start this month but the momentum quickly picks up as the month unfolds. Five months of working behind the scenes is about to pay off with a noticeable energetic shift towards the middle of May. It may feel a bit sleepy as Mercury goes direct on May 3rd with the shadow period lasting until May 21st (meaning it takes until then for Mercury to regain full strength), and Venus will still take until May 19th to regain its full strength. Even in the time of these remaining shadow periods that encompass a good bit of the month, there are some excellent aspects to help start moving things along, especially starting on May 9th with a positive Sun-Pluto trine.
As the Sun continues to make its way through the sign that represents physical manifestation, Taurus, I am reminded of that old saying “you get what you ask for”. Now is the time to ask for what you desire. Taurus is the sign of all things material, physical, and financial and most commonly, our basic survival needs – food, shelter, sex, etc. Security and stability of these resources are associated with Taurus. Comfort and ease in obtaining these resources are also important considerations for Taurus. And of course, there’s the infamous bull-headed stubbornness and force that Taurus can have when it’s will is contested or when it wants its way. Even though the Sun in Taurus is about materializing our desires asking alone would not be enough; in addition to asking, one must be willing to take action.
On May 9th a wonderful Sun-Pluto alignment brings increased potential for someone or something with tremendous power to align with your desires. The power could come from a discovery, a person, a mysterious source, or countless other places. Following hunches at this time can greatly increase your chances during this alignment. On the following day, an in depth Full Moon in Scorpio reveals something in the arena of shared power, financial matters, resources, intimate business, romance, or other relationships, esoteric studies, psychological matter or studies, mysteries or research come to completion, or fruition now. Mercury is also conjunct Uranus during this lunation so some nerve-jangling or positively exciting news could accompany this energy. Always guard your head and brain when Uranus connects with Mercury in Aries, the synapses will be firing at full capacity during this transit.
“But wait, there’s more” The big exciting news this month is the transiting Nodes changing signs to the Leo/Aquarius polarity. The years of this transit bring major attention to finding your bliss. In your birth chart, the lunar nodes—known as the North node and South node—hold the keys to your destiny and ultimate life lessons. In astrology, your life purpose is encoded in the North node and South node of the moon. The lunar nodes are directly opposite each other in the chart. The North Node is our mission statement, our declaration of intention; the path not yet travelled but a journey we need to undertake anyway. As the North Node travels through the sign of Leo, (the sign of big hearts, big mouths and big hair) emitting a steady warmth from May 2017 through November 6th, 2018.
Leo is the sign that rules the heart, both the physical heart and the spiritual one. The transit of the North Node through Leo, the sign of the heart, is indeed a great time to take heart in “who” you are. Part of taking heart in your endeavors is summoning courage, another Leo theme. And with good reason, as heart and courage are psychically intertwined. The root of the word is cor- the Latin word for heart. Courage originally meant ‘To speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart”, no fear, no shame. While in Virgo, the North Node taught us the importance of using discernment, discretion, critical thinking and attention to finer details in the face of doubt and uncertainty. Now, we’ve got some finely honed skills, we know how to use them and we’re not afraid to show it!
Underlining all the fun cosmic activity this month is a tricky alignment between idealistic Jupiter and fantasy-prone Neptune. Between May 11 and 25, transiting Jupiter quincunx Neptune, testing our faith or belief in someone or something. In order to grow and expand we have to dream and take risks. During this transit we will find the limits of what is possible in the current conditions. This is a time of give and take. To increase our wealth, prosperity or happiness, we may have put our trust in our own abilities or counted on someone else to come through for us. Now is crunch time as people decide which team to back or which proposal to put their money behind. This same principle applies to any of our hopes and dreams for the future. The sensible thing to do now is to adapt and evolve.
Our thinking returns to practical matter on May 15th when Mercury enters Taurus. After a period of returning to the mad rush of Aries, we now get to slow down and think at a more leisurely pace again. Our strength will return now and our lives will become more stable. We may need some of that Taurus thinking on May 19th when Venus opposes overly optimistic Jupiter. Overindulging in fun, spending, or other excess activity is definitely a possible when these two planets align. The May horoscope shows it is a great time to unwind but try to hold prudence as a balancing point during this time frame. Alternatively, there is an increased chance for burn out burning the candle at both ends trying to satisfy relationship expectations and needs of the self.
We become more inquisitive on May 20th when Sun enters whimsical Gemini. When the Sun moves into the mutable, air sign of Gemini, which is ruled by the planet Mercury, its energy is flexible, quick, and filled with curiosity. When the life-giving forces of the Sun shine through Gemini, we get the incessant questions of the young child who wants to know everything there is to know, and whose mind soaks up the answers like a sponge. Gemini is about ideas: talking about them, thinking about them, swirling around in them. While the Sun, whose energy defines life itself, is traveling through this world, we really need those facts and figures and trivia. We thrive on variety and thirst for change.
This theme is amplified even more on May 25th as the New Moon will be at 5 degrees of Gemini. This is the time to plant those metaphoric seeds. The New Moon in Gemini wants us to plant a specific type of seed -- a thought or an idea -- and it's perfectly fine with not knowing how these plans will unfold. All areas of communication including devices like phones, tablets, or computers, writing, editing, other work or project centered on self-expression, mobility, vehicles, siblings, and cousins will be highlighted during this lunation. Although Gemini is sometimes associated with superficial connections and trivial conversations, dig a little deeper and you will see that there is much to learn from the light, two-way, and comfortable communications that characterize the sign.
