Revelation 21:23 The city does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.
OUR ETERNAL LIGHT
When the prophet Isaiah looked ahead to Jesus' birth he said, "The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of the shadow of death a light has dawned" (9:2). Surely Jesus was a light while he lived and walked among the people, bringing many out of the darkness of their unbelief into the family of believers.
The Savior also directs our thoughts toward the heavenly light for which we long. How glorious will our days be there! All weeping and sadness will be gone. All sorrow, distress, and disease will disappear for there will be no more sin and no more fallen world. The wise men journeyed far to see Jesus in Bethlehem, but at the same time they were on an even greater journey: the believer's walk to heaven.
We will see Christ again face to face when we look upon Him in heaven. Our pilgrimage here will end there in worship, praise, and happiness!
In the heavenly country bright
Need they no created light;
Thou its Light, its Joy, its Crown,
Thou its Sun which goes not down.
There forever may we sing
Alleluias to our King!
(The Lutheran Hymnal, 127:5)
