Hello Firstname
|
|
|
|
Next Wednesday we welcome David Spears FRPS ASIS FRMS who will be presenting his talk called Beyond the Naked Eye.
David is a retired cameraman, producer and photographer. He is a Zoologist graduate from London University and holds two FRPS distinctions, an ASIS qualification from the RPS and is a Fellow of the Royal Microscopical Society.
His companies, Science Pictures and Clouds Hill Imaging, produced over 300 documentary programmes for BBC, C4, ITV, Discovery etc. Some won awards from RTS, BMA, and EC Education .
|
|
His talk explores the range of imaging techniques used by scientists and technologists and provides images that demonstrate that informative pictures produced for scientists do not have to be unattractive and badly composed.
His equipment in his studio includes 1967 Zeiss photomicroscope converted to LED lighting and mirrorless digital cameras. He also has a Zeiss LEO 430 scanning electron microscope; a left-over from his programme producing days. He has also been pioneering the focus stacking technology, building two different systems, again working with mirrorless cameras.
With his wife (also a zoologist) they have produced an illustrated book called “Unseen Companions” now out of print.
Below are a couple of David's images from the talk

DI Group - Lightroom Extra |
In the November DI meeting we had an excellent introduction to Lightroom when Andrew Whettam demonstrated the Library module and catalogues followed by simple editing which can be applied across multiple images and a demonstration of HDR. Andrew has a distinct style of presentation which is structured and easy to follow. There is never enough time at the DI meetings for technical demos and therefore I have approached Andrew, and he has agreed, to expand his presentation to the next important module ‘Develop’ in Lightroom where generally one would carry out most of the editing.
To allow enough time the whole of this extra meeting would be devoted to Lightroom CC with a break or two for Adobe Lightroom tutorials. Traditionally DI group meets on Mondays but to give others who normally can’t make it on Mondays a chance to attend, this meeting is on TUESDAY evening, 5 February at 7.30pm. All BPS members are welcome to the meeting and as usual chocolate biscuits will be available during the coffee break.

If you have been keeping up with your newsletters, you will have read Bob Faris’s recent article and his generous offer to sponsor a Creative Photographic competition at BPS. The Council has now given the go-ahead for us to run this competition for the first time this summer. It will replace the “Best Creative” awards in the Annual Print and Projected Image competitions and will be instead of the advertised Studio Group competition.
The competition will be held at the AGM on 3 July and will be judged by Colin Harrison FRPS.
Rules
- This is an Open competition, with no levels of entry.
- Images may have been entered into any previous club
competition and may be entered into any subsequent bi-monthly or annual
competition, other than this one.
- Each entrant may submit up to three images. These may be all DPI, all Print or any
combination of the two.
- The judge will select a Best DPI, a Best Print and award the
trophy to one of these two.
- The Trophy winner will not be eligible to enter the next two
Creative Competitions.
- For this competition, a submitted image must have originated as a photographic image or images, produced either in camera or by post processing. All images must be original and may not incorporate elements produced by anyone else. Artwork or computer graphics generated by the entrant may be incorporated so long as the original photographic content predominates. Digital skills should be seen as the tools to compose photographic images into one new single image. The final composition will show the photographer’s artistic interpretation.
The closing date for entries will be 12 June (to be confirmed).
If you have any questions, please address them to Ken Clarke or David Alderson.
We hope as many members as possible will rise to Bob’s challenge, get cracking to compose exciting images and make BPS a hotbed of creative photography. |

The RPS are moving to Bristol. On 7 February they open their new HQ at The Paintworks in Brislington.
The opening exhibition will be the International Photography Exhibition 161 and a preview of that exhibition is now on display at College Green by City Hall. A picture of this preview is on the left.
Further details of the move and the RPS can be found in their press release, by following this link.

Just to keep you all up to date with progress. The closing date passed last weekend and saw a total of 9696 images submitted by 942 photographers. Of these 44 are BPS members, so here's hoping for a good showing of BPS names in the list of acceptances. Judging takes place over the weekend of 15, 16 & 17 of February and you are welcome to come along to see the judging in action. I will publish the timetable closer to the date when I will let you know the times of the sessions when you can come along. |
PSA Interclub Travel Competition - Round 1 |
The first round of the PSA Interclub Travel Competition took place recently.
This is a competition organised by the PSA Photo Travel Division (PTD) and is open to all PSA-member clubs. Clubs are divided into Groups, with BPS being in Group A, along with 20 other clubs and each club is allowed to submit six images. The rounds are judged by PSA member clubs (BPS judged one round last year), with each image being awarded up to 15 points, league positions are decided by the highest aggregate score. A number of individual images are also given awards for being in the top group of individual scores. Although we came overall 12th= in this round, Pete McCloskey gained a medal for 1st place with his image Dawn Fishermen Li River - well done.

DPIC - SUPPORT BPS: Still time to get your tickets - The WCPF Interclub Digital Projected Image Competition (DPIC) is being held at Exeter on 10 February. Tickets are on sale and can be found on-line by following this link - (selling fast, so get your skates on!)
This event is usually very poorly supported by BPS members, with the majority of those who go being from the Salon Committee. It would be really great if other members could support BPS and go to Exeter on the 10th.
MEMBERS' EXHIBITION
Please note, the closing date for the annual WCPF Members' Exhibition is drawing near, 4 March. This is an exhibition that is open to all members of WCPF affiliated clubs (BPS is one of those) and is for both prints and PDIs. For full information, visit the WCPF website.

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
|
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.
|
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk
The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, if they are wrong, please let Carol know.
