John 1:14 And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.
THAT YOU MAY BELIEVE
John's gospel is full of some of the most remarkable statements:
John 19:30 "It is finished!"
John 20:8 Then the other disciple ... went in also; and he saw and believed.
John 20:28 "My Lord and my God!"
John 20:31 ... but these are written that you may believe ...
John 11:25 "I am the resurrection and the life."
John 14:1 "Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me."
John 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
These are just a few quick examples. I could list a hundred more. I would never want to attempt to choose between them and say this one or that one is the most important verse. Yet I will say that John 1:14 does seem to be the central theme of John's gospel. It is the crescendo of his opening song and the rest of the gospel is wrapped around it.
Within this verse we find the four threads which seem to weave throughout the rest of the gospel:
"the Word became flesh" -- the incarnation
"we beheld his glory" -- the witnesses
"the only begotten of the Father" -- the Son of God
"full of grace and truth" -- the Gospel
