Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 20 April

Next Wednesday, 20 April, we have something a little different, when we have a presentation by Clive Greenland ASINWP QGPP LRPS MIET from Corsham who will be giving his talk Aviation Photography

Clive’s interest in aviation photography started in the late 1970’s with a Canon AE-1 camera. He is a WCPF judge and a member of Nonpareil Camera Club. A qualified professional photographer with “The Guild of Photographers”, Associateship membership with “The Societies of International Nature and Wildlife Photographers” (SINWP) and an LRPS qualification.

Clive’s image of a Swiss air force F/A-18C Hornet at RIAT in 2019 won him “Events Photographer of the year 2019” with The Societies of Photographers.

Between 2018 and 2021 Clive had three further nominations for Events Photographer of the year, all involving aviation images!

The presentation will include a Bahama's adventure undertaken in 1997 over 10 days with 30 hours of flying combined with photography, routing through the Bermuda triangle, also known as the Devil's Triangle or Hurricane Alley, not an area to get the flight planning wrong!

It will include aerial images and images from the ground at RIAT and other flying displays throughout the UK.

The talk will also include drone images with a DJI Mini 2 taken over the last two years, including how to get stunning landscape images that are only achievable with a drone!

RPS Digit
BPS member, Mike Martin has a 6-page article published in the current edition of the RPS Digit Magazine. Below is the beginning of the article, if it whets your appetite to the extent that you'd like to read more, please follow the link at the end of the excerpt.
Everlasting Tulips
HOW DOES MY MIND WORK:
THE DROSTE EFFECT
MIKE MARTIN

How does my mind work?
Where does the creativity come from?

The answer to the second question is easier than the first – we are bombarded daily with images through multiple channels. You just have to recognise that and see the opportunities some of those images present. As to the first question, who knows?

Let’s focus on one narrow genre that I have been looking at during the pandemic.

I’ve been a lifelong fan of the drawings by MC Escher. As a younger self I, along with many others, had a poster of that never-ending staircase on my wall. I also had posters of work by Dali, Magritte and other surrealists. I love optical illusions too.

I watched Adobe introduce then withdraw their Pixel Bender feature and Droste filter for Photoshop CS4 and CS5 and then ‘forgot it’ until the Pandemic, when once again I started looking at the potential of the Droste effect (or picture in picture effect).

Everlasting Tulips (at the head of this article) is an early image created in 1998, pre-digital, from a slide scanned and modified in Photoshop. This uses simple recursion using a plug-in for Photoshop.

Picture Frame Freebies
We have a number of picture frames which are surplus to requirements at Unit13. If members would like these, please let me know and arrangements can be made for you to pick them up. If you want to see what they look like, they are the same as the ones in the staircase at Unit13.

The frames are 20" x 16" and are complete with removable hardboard backs. We are not asking anything for these, but would appreciate a donation being made in the name of BPS to a local charity.

2022 Comedy Pet Photo Awards
I have received the following details about the 2022 Comedy Pet Awards. I haven't had a chance to check it out fully, but it all seems above board, so why not have a go!

We wanted to get in touch as the 2022 Comedy Pet Photo Awards are now open at www.comedypetphoto.com just in case you wanted to share the details with your members. Hopefully it might be of interest and a bit of light relief and positivity - very, very much needed at the moment.

In brief, we are funny pet photo contest open to everyone, aiming to raise a smile by celebrating our pets and help fund some really hardworking pet charities in the UK. Through our competition sponsors Animal Friends we are donating £30,000 to 3 small animal welfare charities, one for cats, one for dogs and one for all rescue animals. This year we really want to grow the competition so that it becomes a sustainable source of funding for well-deserving organisations.

There are more details on the website www.comedypetphoto.com but here are some headlines:

Entry is via the website, for both images and videos. Closing date is 1st July 2022

The winning photo entry receives £2000 cash, plus a trophy and they get to choose a charity to donate £5000. The winning video entry receives £1000 cash and all category winners will receive a fabulous goodie bag!
There are 7 categories - Dog, Cat, Horse, All Other Animals, Pets who look like someone famous or owners, Video and Junior (16 or under)

Junior category is free to enter for under 16’s otherwise there is a small entry fee - £1.95 for 1 entry, £5 for 5 and £10 for 15 entries. (Charging for entry means we can offer the cash prizes)
Animal Welfare and education is a strong element of the competition and all images are vetted by Emma Milne, our competition vet.

I really hope this is of interest to you, let me know if any questions, we will do our best to try and answer them.

Thanks for your time,

Paul, Tom and Michelle - The Comedy Pet Team

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue
