Wednesday 18 September

Next week we welcome Colin Walls ARPS AIPF CPAGB to BPS, when he will be presenting his talk: Observational Photography. Here are a few words from Colin to tell us a bit about himself and to describe what we can expect.

Like most photographers, I started out shooting anything that came to hand. Over the years, I have dabbled in a number of genres, looking for my niche. In the last few years, I have begun to feel that I found it: Observational Photography. This is defined [by me] as: “Seeking and finding images in unexpected places”. This talk is a tour through some of my recent work as I home in on this genre.

I have been doing photography all my adult life and am very keen on camera clubs, having belonged to a few in places that I've lived over the last 30 years. I have been doing judging and presenting to clubs for about 20 years. I have two websites:

Not Received Your Newsletter
I regularly get emails from members who have not received their newsletter and wanting to know why. I can assure all members that, unless a member leaves the Society, we never remove that person from the mailing list. So, the reason is almost invariably that your email program has dumped my wonderful words of wisdom into your spam or junk folder, which should be your first port of call in your search. Here are a few example of how to prevent a sender's email being classed as junk or spam:

Gmail: Find the email in the spam folder, right click, and select Not spam.
Outlook: Right click email and select Junk and Never block sender.
Mozilla Thunderbird: Open the email from the sender you want to mark as safe
Select the sender's address
Select Add to Address Book
You can also mark a sender as safe by clicking the blue star icon next to the sender's name in the email header. To verify the new contact, click the blue star again.
Apple Mail: Click on the sender's email address at the top of the email. A dropdown menu will appear. Click on "Add to Contacts" or "Add to VIPs" to whitelist the sender.
Windows Mail: to mark an email sender as safe in Windows Mail, you can add them to your Safe Senders list so their messages aren't moved to your Junk Email folder:
Sign in to Outlook Web App
Select Settings > Mail
Under Options, select Block or allow Under Safe senders and recipients, enter the email address or domain you want to add
Select Add or press Enter
Select Save

This list is not exhaustive, and I suggest that you Google something along the lines of:
"windows mail (or whatever email program you use) - how to mark a email sender as safe" and just follow the instructions.

There have been odd times when the newsletter has appeared in neither your in box nor junk/spam folder and it has been down to your internet provider being a tad over-zealous when trying to protect you from nasties and has stopped the newsletter ever reaching you, in this case it is up to you to contact them and tell tham that they are stopping you recieving a newsletter you have paid for and to desist from doing so in the future.

You can also just open up a copy of any previous edition of the newsletter and scroll down to the end, where you will always find a section headed Missed a Copy of the Newsletter? which contains the archive link.

If all this fails, then use this link to go to the archive of all newsletter editions:
I suggest that you file this link somewhere safe, just in case you need it in the future.

Print Competition - Round 1
The closing date for the first print round of the new season is Wednesday, 25 September and there is a box awaiting your entries on the stage in Unit 13.

For new members, members venturing into prints for the first time and, dare I say it, established members who may wish a little reminder, here are a few pointers.

Club level entrants may submit a maximum of 3 prints in each round. Intermediate and Advanced entrants may submit a maximum of 2.

Prints awarded by the judge earn points. Across the four rounds these points are accumulated. Trophies are presented in each of the 3 levels (Club, Intermediate, and Advanced) to the holders of the highest number of points at the end of the four rounds.

Prescribed Topic Challenge
For entrants at all levels, one of your 3 or 2 images may be submitted for an optional Prescribed topic challenge in each round. These will be judged together, regardless of the entrant’s level. This entry must be identified by ticking the box on the print label. Points gained for the Prescribed topic will also accrue to the entrant’s score at the appropriate level.

A separate tally of Prescribed scores will be kept, with an award for the winner at the end of the season.

Labels
You can download labels for your prints from the Members’ Portal on the BPS website. Go to Competition Closing Dates and find the download links at the foot of the list - alternatively use the links here by clicking on the version you require. The two versions are either  PDF or MS Word.

Digital Copies
It’s essential that you supply a digital copy of each print you enter. This should be the same size as for the PDI competitions – 1600 x 1200 – but there is no need to give any other information than your name and the title.  You don’t need to add your membership number or level of entry. Please upload the digital copies of your prints via this link: bristolphoto.org.uk/printsupload

The judge for Round 1 will be Aleks Gjika DPAGB, EFIAP and the optional Prescribed topic for this round is Blue.

Let’s hope for a great start to the print competition year!  Please contact me at dalderson@btopenworld.com if you have any questions or problems.

Distinctions Advisory Group
To all members - a date for your diary.

The next meeting of the Distinctions Advisory Group will be held at the Clubrooms at 7.30pm on Monday 23 September, when advice will be given by Pete McCloskey FRPS, Andrew Marker FRPS and Ralph Snook ARPS to anyone wishing to, or in the process of, applying for photographic distinctions.

These evenings are primarily targeted at those aiming for RPS or PAGB distinctions, but anyone aiming for a photographic distinction is welcome.

If you are already well on the way down your chosen path or just thinking about dipping your toe in the murky waters of photo distinctions, you are welcome. Bring along your pictures (PDI or prints) and you can receive suggestions and advice about your next step forward.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Marketplace
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk.

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!

DO NOT REPLY TO THE NEWSLETTER.
