Hello Firstname

Wednesday 12 September

Next Wednesday, we welcome Tesni Ward who will be presenting her talk called Working with Wildlife. Tesni says of her talk: "Wildlife can be one of the most challenging forms of photography, with little to no control over your subject or surroundings. It can push any photographers resolve and patience to the limit but persistence will often pay off. Follow the journey of a wildlife photographer from the very first steps to the present day, learning some tips and tricks along the way and seeing some of the challenges and how to overcome them."

2018-2019 Print Competition - Closing Date
26 September - Print Competition Round 1 - Judge: Ed Cloutman EFIAP
For the advanced level only, the competitions will be subdivided into an ‘open’ category and a ‘prescribed’ category. In each round, two submitted images can be in the 'open' category, the subject and style being the free choice of the entrant. The third image submitted must be in the subject or style category specified for each competition. The Competition subject is "Wood".

Prints On Display
The more observant of you may have noticed that the prints from the BPS Archive which have featured on the staircase walls have been changed. Please take time to have a look at these as they represent some of the best work from BPS members, some current and some from the past.

There are also displays on the main meeting room walls of prints from members who have recently gained RPS distinctions. These are: Gerry Gill and David Alderson - LRPS and Derwood Pamphilon and Richard Kay - ARPS

2018-2019 BPS Handbook
The new 2018-2019 BPS Handbook is now available. For those of you who haven't already collected your copy, one can be picked up from the computer desk at the rear of the main meeting room, please take your copy and tick your name off on the list provided.

You will notice a few changes from the 2017-2019 Book, the main ones are:
Page 3 - Subscription rates
Page 4 - Various Council of Management changes
  • Secretary - following the resignation of John Hudson earlier in the year, the post of Secretary has now been taken on by Nick Ball. The role Nick will be taking on is slightly different to previous years, in that he will be responsible for the legal/official tasks usually associated with a Company Secretary. The task of minuting the Council meetings, previously done by the Secretary will now be done by Carol Sykes.
  • Photography Course - this shows Jeff Hargreaves as "Acting" co-ordinator, we are actively looking for someone to take this job on a more permanent basis.
  • Clubroom Steward - After more years than most members care to remember, Gill Peeke has stood down as Clubroom Steward. Vicky Harrison has kindly (or is it bravely?) stepped into the breach, for which we offer our thanks. Vicky is welcomed onto the Council.
Page 22 et seq - Competition Rules. Some of these have changed:
  • Page 23 - Nature images should now conform to the PAGB guidelines.
  • Page 24 - Prescribed categories.
  • Page 26 - Competitions - Rules for Entrants, paragraph 3 - Image sizes.

Presentations
Last Wednesday evening saw a couple of presentations being made.
The first was to Gill Peeke in gratitude for the years of unstinted service as Clubroom Steward. Chairman, Jeff Hargreaves presented Gill with a card signed by members of the Society, along with a gardening gift voucher which should help her fill all that spare time she is now going to have. This was followed by Gill's successor, Vicky Harrison, presenting her with a bouquet of flowers on behalf of the Society.

The second presentation was made to Barry Mead, on behalf of the Royal Photographic Society. Barry won a ribbon in the annual RPS Digital Imaging Group Projected Image Competition. The award was for his image Wheels Of Time and was the personal choice of selector Colin Harrison in the Altered Reality Class.

Is There A Plumber In The House?
We are looking for a plumber to carry out a small amount of work in the Gents WC. However, as is often the case, we are finding it difficult finding someone reliable and wondered if there is anyone in the Society who is a plumber or knows of a plumber who would be able to help. We are not looking for a freebie, as we will pay the right price for the right job, so if you can help or know someone who does, please let me know as soon as possible by email at unit13@bristolphoto.org.uk

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Studio Bookings
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website.
