SA PRESIDENT DEFENDS HOSTING OF HAMAS
Earlier this week in Parliament President Jacob Zuma defended the hosting of the Palestinian political party Hamas. In October South Africa's ruling party, the ANC, hosted Khaled Meshal, the head of Hamas. While in South Africa Meshal, amongst other things, called for increased support of the non-violent boycott, divestment and sanctions (BDS) against Israel campaign. Hamas has joined Fatah and other Palestinian parties in calling on South Africa to increase its support for the BDS movement. Click here for more information.

ISRAELI MILITARY CHIEFS FACE ARREST IN SOUTH AFRICA
South African authorities have pledged to enforce warrants of arrest granted by Turkish authorities against four Israeli Commanders: Chief of General Staff Rau Ashkenazi, Naval Forces Commander Eliezer Marom, Head of Airforce Intelligence Brigadier-General Avishay Levi and Major-General Chief of IDF Military Intelligence Amos Yadlin. The warrants were granted following Israel's attacks on a humanitarian ship to Palestine in 2010 that resulted in the killing of 9 aid workers.
According to news reports,
"an arrest alert notice for the four was circulated to the SA Border Control system on September 3 and the information has been forwarded to Interpol SA to liaise with Interpol in Turkey for a red notice to be issued."
This marks an important legal precedent against Israeli impunity, war crimes and violations of international law. We commend the South African authorities and organisations who have been at the forefront of this legal campaign: the MRN, MLA and PSA as well as the larger Palestine solidarity movement.
