Hello Firstname

Wednesday 29 November
Next week sees Round 2 of the Projected Image Competition, which is being judged by Rob Ryan FRSA ARPS. Bob is an international educator who has spent many years exploring the way we make decisions and judgements. He is, currently, Professor Emeritus at the University of Gloucestershire and Honorary Senior Fellow at the University of Manchester Business School.
He is passionate about different forms of photography and has developed robust methods of learning how to both create great images and how to assess them. So, we should be in for a good evening's judging.

A Thank You From Jim - 90 Years Young
I received the following from Jim:

"To BPS membership,

First to thank BPS for having a first celebration of a birthday on a club evening.
Good to have Gill helping my son and daughter.
Thanks too, for all who signed the card for my birthday.
Some apologies to those who were giving me good wishes, but I had so much difficulty in hearing!!! .............

..........After all the surprises of the last few days, I will be looking for some winter sun.
See you all next month."

Beyond The Wall Group
The next couple of meetings of BTW Group will be on:

4 December in the club studio, when Mark Gilbert will continue his series of lighting presentations, this time concentrating on using flashguns and Speedlites. The workshop will help you to understand how to use your flashgun or Speedlight. This will cover basics, high speed flash and fill-in flash.  Bring your camera and flashgun or Speedlight, the manuals for them and a notebook and pen.

22 January, Pete McCloskey will host an evening based on improving your prints before they are entered into the club's Print Competitions. Each BTW member will be able to have 2/3 prints analysed by Pete, whose constructive comments will help you produce better prints.

Both meetings commence at 7.30pm

If you require further information, please contact the BTW group leader, David Grierson - email .

Bristol Salon of Photography
Now is the time send in your entry to the 2018 Bristol Salon and give yourself the chance of some glory on the international photography scene.

For those of you who aren't too sure what the Bristol Salon is: it is an international photographic exhibition that has been running since the mid 1940s and is the largest exhibition of its type in the UK attracting entries from nearly 70 different countries. Entrants may submit up to 16 images across 4 sections (Open, Monochrome, Photo Travel and Nature) which are put before a panel of selectors who pick the top 20% to 30% or so to be accepted. Entry for BPS members is free as long as we receive your entry before 20 January, after that you will have to pay the full fee. This might seem like a long way off, but with Christmas and the New Year coming up you'll soon find that the closing date is upon you, so beat the rush and get your entry in now!

To help you with your entry there is a small tutorial that can be downloaded by following this link. When entering, be sure to tick the box on the first page of the entry system to say that you are a BPS member and fill in your BPS membership number which you will find at the top of this newsletter; when you get to the payment page at the end, click ALREADY PAID.

Here's hoping that we see a rush of entries, but in the meantime if you have any queries, feel free to email me at chairman@bristolsalon.co.uk

Full details can found on the BPS website

All the best

PSA Interclub Travel Competition
BPS enter the DPIC and the GB Cup competitions with pictures selected from the HCs and awards from our internal competitions, however we also enter an inter-club competition organised by our member Greg Duncan on behalf of the PSA, (Photographic Society of America). The problem is that we do not have enough Travel pictures getting awards in our competitions for us to make up an entry.
Travel pictures should depict a way of life or a time and place. If members have any good suitable pictures, could they let our External Competitions Secretary, Pete McCloskey, have copies for our image bank.
Please e-mail to pmccloskey11@btinternet.com in the format of our competitions. If you have any questions regarding this, I'm sure that Pete will be only too pleased to answer them.

Clevedon Marine Lake
Millie Spaven has been approached by her friend Linda Knott whose late husband was one of the founders of  MARLENS, the group responsible for getting the Clevedon Marine Lake restored and turned back into a full functional facility on Clevedon’s seafront. Linda needs a few photos to submit to the local paper along with her article about the event. It would be nice if some members from BPS could come along, do some night time photography and give a couple of their images to Linda for her article.  Anyone who can come please let Millie know. Details as follows.
On 9 December, at 4.00p.m. there will a lantern parade lead by a Samba band, starting from Clevedon Pier, progressing along the sea front and finishing at the Marine Lake where the model boat club will be sailing their boats lit with candles. If you can help, please contact Millie at millie.spaven@blueyonder.co.uk

Would members who are using the clubrooms or studio please note that when replacing the chairs, the chairs should be:
  • In rows of 12 (6 either side of the central walkway).
  • 5 Rows of black at the front.
  • The remaining rows using the red chairs.
  • Chairs are kept within the darker blue floor tiles.
  • A walkway must be maintained between the side walls and the seating and also between the computer desk and that back row of seats. This is to facilitate easier exit in the case of an emergency.

3 & 4 Feb

The Fotospeed Academy is holding a workshop at the BPS clubrooms in February to help those who are looking to go for distinctions with the likes of RPS, FIAP, PAGB, BPA and more. The course is being run by ‘The Welsh Dragon’, AKA Margaret Salisbury. Margaret will display examples of successful and also unsuccessful panels, to highlight their strengths and weaknesses. She will offer guidance to participants looking for Distinctions or running Open/International Exhibitions, and use her own experience to encourage and assist you.
She will also explain the up to date criteria for the different associations and John Herlinger from The Fine Art Print room will also be on hand to share his knowledge on the best ways to present your work for panels. Finally, you will be asked to bring your own work with you which will be displayed and reviewed by other members in the class. BPS already runs its own print mentoring evenings, but this could well be a useful addition to those evenings. The dates are 3 & 4 February (two courses). Full details can be found by following this link.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Congratulations to Sue O'Connell on being awarded a Gold Medal at the 2017 Smethwick International.

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
