May 20, 2007 from the editor... Explosive. That's the word that comes to mind when reading Polgar Speaks Out! This is a must read, but so is most of the rest of this issue's highlights. Following up on the election theme is Part Two of Randy Bauer's election interview, along with an essay by GM Raymond Keene on chess & longevity. Best of all though is introducing two new members of the Chessville Family - Gary Gifford and Daniel Boyd. Gary is our Problem-Meister, and you've been enjoying (and, hopefully, learning too) from his Problems of the Week for the past month or so. Making his debut today is Chessville's new LinkMeister, Daniel Boyd. Daniel has taken charge of the extensive Chessville links collection, and is already hard at work bringing them up to date. Chessville is proud to welcome them to the neighborhood!

(5/20) Links Update: six pages cleaned of dead links, from Chessville's new Linkmeister, Daniel Boyd. Check out the freshness on these specific pages: Online Databases; Reviews; Articles & Interviews; Variants; Study Games; and Ratings & Ratings Lists. Chessville is running about ten months behind in updating our links collection, and once Daniel has all of the pages cleaned of dead links (Report Broken Links!!) he'll start adding some of the hundreds of new sites we've learned about over the past year or so. Please join me in welcoming Daniel Boyd, Chessville's Linkmeister!
In the last few weeks, I received countless emails from USCF members asking about the status of the upcoming USCF election and what kind of help is needed? Well, let me tell you what have been taking place. As I stated a few months ago, I received a number of anonymous threatening emails "asking" me to drop out of the election. Otherwise, my family and I would be harmed. I had these emails traced and it came from public places like coffee shops or libraries. Therefore, the investigation came to a dead end. The only info I can get is they came from two areas: the New England area and California. I refused to back down and continued my path to reform the USCF. Then the daily lies, public insults and attacks came on the USCF "Officially" sanctioned forums as well as other forums, including my own blog. That did not stop me. Then came the public legal threats to me, my company and my foundation again on the USCF "Officially" sanctioned forums and my own blog. That did not alter my path. Then came letters from attorneys representing some of the current candidates and their supporters! They want to silence me. They want the truth hidden. They want the status quo to continue. They do not want to relinquish their stronghold of this federation for decades. I have given one example after another to show the incompetence, inefficient and failing ways of the USCF. For this, I am being charged with being too negative and anti-USCF. The long-time chess politicians are pulling out all the stops to make sure that the status quo remains. The same people who less than six months ago hailed me as the biggest asset to the USCF now say that I am a big detriment to chess just because I refused to join their political parties. Most candidates in the past were severely attacked by one of the chess political parties. Members of my team and I are being attacked by all chess political parties because we choose to remain independent and do things in the best interest of US Chess and the USCF. They try to make people think that some of us are in cahoots together to destroy the USCF.
Randy Bauer, Paul Truong and Mikhail Korenman are all independent people who have strong and successful track-records, and they have different viewpoints in many subjects. They all have done a lot for the USCF in recent years, and not just recently in order to appear well in public at election time. I simply recommend them because I feel that they have the most suitable strengths and experience to help the USCF now. It does not mean that there are no other qualified candidates and it does not mean that I would not serve with other qualified candidates. But chess politicians will not hold back when it comes to trying to mislead the members... Read the rest of this riveting guest editorial - Polgar Speaks Out!
Did you know that your brain, has been described as the most complex structure in the observable universe?
No, our place in evolution is entirely down to our massive mental power, unique in known creation. So, the true answer is obvious. If you really want to live long and prosper, forget about jogging, jumping and honing those bronzed pectorals to glistening perfection. It's your brain you have to worry about. Amidst all the noisy worship of the body, worrying little warnings are already surfacing. Medically confirmed observations, for example, that 'super-fit' athletes are somehow more prone to colds and infections than the average mortal. That over-specialised physical fitness, in a curious way, erodes the immune system... Read the entire essay - Live Long and Prosper - by GM Raymond Keene
The Parrot Interviews...
In part one of the interview series, each candidate was asked the same questions about their vision for chess in the USA and how they would go about achieving it, if elected. In part two Chessville asks each candidate board member individualized questions. Question for Randy Bauer: 1) In your previous Answers, and in other writings, you have expressed strong interest in attending to internal standards at USCF, which in some cases are eroded to the point of liabilities. Specifically you have addressed having internal standards by which staff are competency tested or measured against. How would you prioritize the 1, 2, 3 of what needs attention, and how would you implement your ideas from the board level? Randy Bauer: Some of the changes are already underway. When I previously served on the Board, we sought to provide more regular financial reporting, and we now have monthly reports that are coming out on a regular basis. We are now reporting tournament revenue and expenses broken down by tournament so you can get a better sense of profit and loss by event. We are working to make the actual budget submitted to the Delegates on an accrual basis. As with many organizations, the USCF uses a variety of “shadow systems” (such as Excel spreadsheets) for accounting and reporting purposes. While functional, they do not integrate data; as we build new systems and integrate processes, we need to ensure that we can do our routine financial reporting and queries within our actual financial systems, such as our Peachtree accounting system. Only by getting these systems integrated and functional for reporting purposes will we be able to ensure the accuracy of the data. Going forward, we need to do a better job of records management – as we work through issues surrounding USCF’s benefits program, it is difficult to follow the paper trails. While records exist, they are difficult to access, and we need to budget resources to fix this. As a member of the Board, I will work to ensure that these priorities are understood and supported by the rest of the Board, the Executive Director and staff, and the membership as a whole... From: Members of my team and I are being attacked by all chess political parties because we choose to remain independent and do things in the best interest of US Chess and the USCF. They try to make people think that some of us are in cahoots together to destroy the USCF. And if these chess politicians have no qualm about attacking, insulting, demeaning and threatening to harm my family and me, imagine what they would do to others who do not have a voice. They would have no chance. This is why the USCF keeps on losing one member, supporter, volunteer and sponsor after another. People eventually get tired of the same garbage and nonsense and leave. It is my mission to change the culture of chess in this country. This is my passion. I want to make people proud to say that they are chess players and they are members of the USCF. I want the whole country to know about our organization in a positive light. We need everyone to unite to change the current destructive culture of the USCF. This election is the most important USCF election in a long time. It will set the course of this federation for decades to come. From: Interview with Randy Bauer Going forward, we need to do a better job of records management – as we work through issues surrounding USCF’s benefits program, it is difficult to follow the paper trails. While records exist, they are difficult to access... There are too many instances of individual members giving orders to the ED – you can’t effectively have seven voices talking in the ED’s ear. I can help the Board understand the importance of planning, developing and measuring performance and using it to manage the organization, but ultimately its success or failure comes from the willingness of the Board as a whole to buy into their importance... I think either you have ethics or you don’t, and even the most well worded set of standards isn’t going to make unethical people behave ethically. I’m for transparent governance... Ultimately, I hope for a well run organization that provides services that members value and that furthers chess in this country. I don’t think it will happen from hitting one corporate home run. I believe it happens in successive successful steps -- from developing credible budgets, thinking strategically, articulating a vision, and determining goals and objectives to get successful outcomes. It is a process, not an event.
