A new report by Amazon Handmade, revealed Britain saw the biggest increase of new handmade artisans in a decade during lockdown. With a 33% increase in self-employed crafters between 2019 and 2020.
Amazon found crafting hotspots in the UK are Birmingham, Edinburgh and London – and almost half the new crafting businesses were set up by people under 35 years old.

Furthermore, one-in-five of those who took up creative hobbies have been inspired to leave their 9-5 to sell their own handmade goods. Most found the change more full-filling, creating a comfortable, better quality of life – with convenience and the choice when to work.
Millennials (born 1977-1995), are getting into the crafting business because they appreciate the flexibility and see the increasing opportunity. A lot of this new crafting is in beauty and sports goods, but the jewellery secure is expanding too. Reported to increase to £6,547 million in 2019, (including watches).
Mintel reports rising demand from younger consumers for bespoke jewellery. Especially youthful designs that cost between cheap-costume and expensive fine-jewellery. Sustainability and diversity sectors are said to lead, making ethical and cultural jewellery popular.
Then there’s the covid tests. Boris changed the requirement from a lateral-flow to a PCR test two-days after the return. Easily sorted by purchasing £45 PCR tests in advance, wasting the tests we already had – and taking €40 tests the day before we left the island. However, all this takes hours queueing, filling forms, and costs more than the flight!
MiMi’s European visa was easy for a fat fee and an extra night in London before Kempton Park. However, it did mean we had to book the same hotel for the whole week. I like to travel around – resulting in hours in frequent-stop buses. Because the hire company wouldn’t let me take a car as I forgot my driving license! At least I only lost about £100 here.
Nevertheless, it wasn’t all bad. At least the food, weather, hotel, and drinks were good – but nice to get back for a rest!
