Hello Firstname

Wednesday 25 June
Next Wednesday we have a visit from Gabriel O’Shaughnessy MFIAP, FIPF, FRPS, EFIAP/b who will be flying in from Dundalk Photographic Society in Southern Ireland. Gabriel will be presenting his talk called "Express Your Passion".
You can find out much more information about Gabriel by following this link, you will also be able to see his MFIAP panel (when I tried it, the "Show as slideshow" link didn't work, but clicking directly on the first image brought them up).

Print Competition Secretary
A few weeks ago it was proposed that Margaret Collis should become Print Competition Secretary following David & Patsy Southwell's decision to step down due to business commitments. Margaret kindly agreed to take on this role and the appointment was subsequently approved by Council at a meeting on 27th May. Margaret will carry out the role until such time as a successor has been appointed and the successor is fully conversant with all aspects of the job; she will then step down. The Council is extremely grateful to Margaret for taking this on.

Studio Group Competition
An exciting new competition will take place after the AGM on the 9th July following the discovery at the back of the cupboard of the studio cup.

The studio competition will be for images taken during any of the studio group meetings that have taken place between 1st June 2012 and 31st May 2014. Any member who has attended these sessions can submit up to four images which they should rank in order of their preference for being entered in the competition.
The images should be sent to: competitions@bristolphoto.org.uk as soon as possible and should follow the normal rules for digital competitions i.e.:
  1. If you do not receive a Submission Report, this may mean your images have not been received.
  2. Submissions can only be made by email and are not accepted on the night and cannot be made by CD, flash drive or memory stick.
  3. Please be aware that the images are handled automatically by the competition software and the software will reject incorrect images (too large or wrong naming pattern)
  4. Images must not be greater than 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high - note that Portrait format images must not be more than 1050 pixels high.
  5. Save the images as a JPG using the highest quality. (Other file types such as TIFF or PSD will not be accepted).
  6. The projector uses the sRGB colour space and hence you should save the images using the sRGB colour profile. Other profiles (such as Adobe98 or ProPhoto) may result in incorrect display of the image.
  7. Name each file you enter in the following pattern.
  • 01, 02, 03, etc. to show order of preference.
  • underscore (not a hyphen)
  • Title of the image (which can contain spaces and hyphens but must not contain underscore)
  • underscore (not a hyphen)
  • Your Membership Number (shown at top of this newsletter) followed by the letter Z
                Example:-   01_China Blue_496Z.jpg
                                    02_   etc.
Note - everybody use the letter Z.

The images will be shown randomly in pairs following AGM and all present will vote on them on a knockout basis until we have an overall winner who will be presented with the studio cup.

This will be a great opportunity to enter a competition where you won’t need to criticise the judge as well as a chance to celebrate the studio group.

If you’ve enjoyed a studio group meeting please support this new competition, it will be a great chance both for the experienced members and for those new to competitions to try their hand.

Any queries to Nick Ball - email studio@bristolphoto.org.uk

Library
Mike Bigger (Librarian) has recently had a bit of a clear out of some of the older or out of date books from the BPS library.

There are just over 90 books to be disposed of, these have been placed on the window ledge at the rear of the clubroom.

These books are FREE to anyone who wants them but (yes there is always a catch!) please leave a donation of at least £1.00 per book for club funds.

Competitions to Enter
'24 Hours in Bristol' is a unique photographic competition for amateur and professional photographers from the UK and beyond to put their creativity to the test by capturing the essence of life in this vibrant city of Bristol during over a single 24 hour period, which this year is 23-24 August. This is a competition organised by the City Council and even has some cash prizes (much better use of ratepayers' money than painting double yellow lines!). BPS member Paul Smith entered in 2013 and gained an award for his image of an early morning swimmer in Clifton Lido. For full details of the competition, please visit the official website.

2014 South Devon International Salon of Photography will consist of three Digital projected sections: Open (colour or mono) Creative/Altered Reality and Nature. Closing date 19 July. Full details and on-line entry on their website.

Shock, Horror - Baby Eats Blanket!
Club members Marcin & Larisa Lubianka have recently had a new arrival, Michael, who was born on May 20th - Congratulations to you both. Many members would have seen baby Michael last Wednesday when Marcin & Larisa popped in before the meeting, but for those of you who didn't see the little chap, here's a snap of him - aaaaah

BPS Website - Members' Gallery
Barry is still looking for more images for the Members' Gallery on the BPS Website. He is particularly interested in images from newer members. They don't have to be world class images, they just have to show what you have been up to (photographically). Images need to be saved at 72dpi and sized at 600 pixels on the longest side.
Please email your images to Barry at barrymead@blueyonder.co.uk

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
There are several trumpets to blow this week. First, Greg Duncan has been flying the flag us chap's in the Duncan household and is now Greg Duncan EPSA; this was gained by having more than 700 acceptances in PSA approved international exhibitions, no mean feat (and not cheap either!) - Well done Greg.

Secondly, 3 BPS members represented the Western Counties (WCPF) in the recent PAGB Inter Federation Open PDI Competition and had images accepted, these were John Chamberlin - Abandoned, Derwood Pamphilon - The Ballet Dancers and Keith Wood - The Jump. Not bad considering only six from WCPF made the grade!

The Ballet dancers - Derwood Pamphilon

Abandoned - John Chamberlin

The Jump - Keith Wood

If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
