DI Group
All members are invited to the next DI (zoom) meeting on Monday 8 August at 7.30pm.

It is the start of the holiday season but I hope not everybody will be gone over the next couple of months. Many of you may have already been away taking advantage of the wonderful weather and hope you will have taken some wonderful images for the new competition season.  On Wednesday we saw some very creative images from Andrea Hargreaves and I am sure that will have inspired some of you to experiment using some of your stock images to do some creative images.

You are welcome to send in your images for us all to admire or ask for constructive comments from your fellow members. DI meetings are informal and please feel free to raise questions on digital imaging and if you just enjoy watching you are welcome too.

As usual please send your images to me by Sunday 7 August, by 6 pm. Images: JPG format, sRGB colour space, 1600 x 1200 pixels (same as competitions but not strict), prefix filenames with 01, 02, 03 etc. if you wish to show them in that order. Email attachment size - max 20Mb per email as many as necessary.

Masters of Print
Master of Print 2023

It is back! We are ready! I am delighted to help with coordinating the entry for the club – again!

I understand the rules for entry have been tightened a little this year such that no entries will be accepted that have “medalled or been accepted (or seen!)” in PAGB salons. The organisers want to see fresh new work.  Full rules can be seen here

We won in 2020 but were nudged into second place in 2021 by Catchlight CC, we are not bitter Frown but revenge can be sweet Smile. Please let me know if you want to join in the fun by emailing me at  progsec@bristolphoto.org.uk. I still have lists from last year so expect a very gentle nudge.

There are 3 Categories, Mono, Colour and Nature. Prints will need to be on A3 paper – don’t rule yourself out if you cannot print or do A3 as Mike Martin and I can provide the service. A maximum of 5 prints can be entered by an individual, cost is £3 per print, £15 maximum expenditure.

If you are new to external competitions it is the ideal first start to catch “salon fever", something a lot of club members are afflicted with. Very few prints will make the cut to be published and awarded but the club scores a point with every entry. If you require constructive advice on potential entries, there are plenty of “experts” (cough) who can be of assistance
  • 1 point for every Print entered, plus
  • 3 points for every Print scored 13 or over by the Judges, plus
  • 5 points for every Print accepted into the Exhibition.
Last year we amassed 99 points, but I know we can do better. Smile

The entry is now open, yay, so let’s get those juices flowing.

Thank you, in advance -  Mopsters!

Margaret Collis - Update
I have now received details of Margaret's funeral from her son, David. The funeral service will be at South Bristol Crematorium at 12.45 on Monday August 22nd, followed by a buffet at The Rising Sun, Backwell.

BPS Outing to City Docks
Last Wednesday 20+ members braved the challenge of paying for car parking at the SS Great Britain and sensors were exposed at a variety of subjects. The weather behaved itself and it was good to see people again post pandemic.

The public were intrigued by the presence of so much expensive camera kit and were very “chatty”, nay honoured to be immortalised by such a prestigious group of ladies and gentlemen (cough).

Among all the exotic cameras was John Hudson with his super drone darting back and forth over the river seeking those different shots!

Apologies to Suzanne and Lance, the photo opportunities were so prolific that I (Steve Field) only got as far as Millennium Square before light stopped play.

We are sure that there will be some stunning images appearing in next year’s competitions, who gets in first with the girl in front of the posters is up for grabs.

Yes, with all that weight on his back Steve did eventually give a stunning rendition of an upturned Turtle and no, it wasn’t captured 😊

At the end of the evening some of us managed to find a nice pub (The Orchard) along with a dazzling array of ciders and keg beers. With the success of this evening, it is going to be a real challenge to find an appetising venue for next year.

Thanks to all who joined us and here’s to stonking images.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Salon acceptances:
Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue

If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

IMPORTANT: Personal Detail Changes

The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, please remember, if you don't tell us we can't possibly know!
