The next Digital Imaging Group Meeting will be on Monday 8 December at 7.30pm.

Meetings are informal and take place at the clubhouse and via zoom.

This month we are going to do something a little bit different. Ralph Snook has offered to undertake a critique with a difference, using AI.

We are inviting you to submit your images to be scrutinised by AI and see how it compares with human judges……They can be images that have already been judged in one of the rounds or if you have an image that you are thinking of entering and want to see what advice AI has to offer then please send up to 5 images to me at dig@bristolphoto.org.uk by 5.00pm on 30 Sunday November. This will give Ralph plenty of time to prepare. Please resize your images to the usual competition size.

As it is Christmas we will finish a little early to enjoy mince pies and coffee.

I look forward to seeing you.

Ladies vs Gents
A few words from our judge on the night:

For many members, the recent Ladies v Gents battle was a new experience but one I hope people enjoyed. Certainly the attendance for the evening of over 70 (present in the clubrooms and on Zoom) suggests it was something members wished to see, along with the first half presentation by Gari Jenkins which got the evening off to a great start.

When I joined the club back in the 1970’s, it was an annual and popular evening, then held at West Mall (the location of our clubrooms before 2016). The format involved 20 Prints from each side in the first half with 20 projected images per side to round up the evening; so a total of 80 images were judged. In those days it was always an experienced external judge who took on the task of marking each image out of 10. It was both a light-hearted and competitive event.

The sets of Images were jumbled up so the judge had no idea which side any image came from, preferable, I think, to presenting the images in a block. I recall there was a limit on the number of images any one member could have included for their respective side, so that each side had to show depth as well as quality.

I had not realised that this ‘battle’ had never been held at our current premises but why it was dropped I am not sure. I do recall a time when the women won three times in a row, so I assume it was the men who encouraged its demise!

So can I urge Council and the Programme Secretary to include a battle between the Men and Women members in the next and subsequent programmes, which I am sure could be enjoyed by all (already pencilled in for next Autumn – Ed).

John Chamberlin

PDI Images - Keylines
The judge for Round 2 of the PDI Competition mentioned on quite a few occasions that the image on the screen could do with a "keyline" to help separate the dark background of the image from the equally dark surrounding area of the projection screen. This would have allowed the judge to have seen where the image stopped and the screen began, something that has also been mentioned by a few previous judges to visit BPS. Those members who are a bit long in the tooth should be well aware of this, but some newer members may be less so.

Below are a couple of examples of images, with and without keylines, shown against a black background, typical of the way they would look against the black screen surround. Hopefully you can see the huge difference just adding a 3-pixel line around the outside of the image makes. If you aren't sure how to do this, I'm sure some of the more experienced members will be only too pleased to tell you.

Kingswood Salver
A number of members travelled down to Clyst St Marys for the Kingswood Salver on  Saturday. Sadly our run of successes came to an end. The Judge, Les Loosemoore commented favourable on our entry, but only enough for Mike Martin to receive Highly Commended for his Paddington Staircase (right-hand image). All the panels should be on the WCPF website by the time you read this.

Thanks to everyone who supported Rachel Domleo and Mike Martin in pulling together the Bristol entry.

Time to start thinking for next year’s entry to re-gain the Silverware for our trophy cabinet.
