Advancing Caribbean Culture

Advancement of Caribbean Culture

Exploring Calypso Music’s Historical Impact on New York City’s Cultural Landscape Through a series of short articles to be published on Tropicalfete.com and various media platforms and social networks, we will take readers and listeners on a journey that documents the significant contribution that calypso music, created on the island of Trinidad and popularized throughout the Caribbean. Veteran journalist Patricia Meschino and journalist/artist Keran “Fimber” Deterville will offer invaluable professional conversations about calypso and the role New York City has played in the development of this genre that celebrated the centennial of its first recording (with vocals). Within this program Tropicalfete will look at a time when calypso performances were major attractions on Broadway and sold out venues such as the Village Vanguard; the New York City area record labels that specialized in calypso recordings; the calypsonians that became stars in New York City; the New York City based disc jockeys that played calypso on mainstream radio stations, the calypso songs that became crossover hits and the various art-forms, including dance and film, that have been influenced by calypso.

As a Caribbean cultural arts organization, Tropicalfete’s board members are proud to present this program during Immigrant Heritage Week 2015 (IHW), which begins on April 17th (the day in New York City history 108 years ago when the largest amount of immigrants crossed Ellis Island) and runs through April 24th. Moreover, in observance of the 50th Anniversary of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965, which abolished the national origins quota system and is viewed as a landmark victory for civil rights, ( Stay Turn as will be partnering with Trevor Wilkins Calypso show on WNYE 91.5FM)
