The February Issue
of
Modern Flavor Magazine is live!
It’s February – Let’s Celebrate!
February is the shortest, but one of the most opulent months of the year, with so many things and reasons to celebrate, including a month-long commemoration of Black History, where we recognize and celebrate the plethora of contributions and learn about the central role of African Americans in US history! In the midst of that month-long celebration, February also includes Presidents Day – the day set aside to remember our past presidents as well as the birthday of George Washington. And we can’t forget Valentine’s Day.

Traditionally, on Valentine’s Day we shower those closest to our hearts with sweet confections, cards and flowers. Some think it’s a wasted day, and that we should celebrate our love year-round. This is true; however, I rather like the idea of a day being set aside to do some extra-special things for the ones we love. To top it all off, my birthday falls in the month of February, and I feel super-special that it does! I get to celebrate one more year of life in the midst of all that rich history and in the midst of so much love.

Speaking of love, Peace in the Storm will soon be celebrating the release of Elissa Gabrielle’s latest novel, Eye of the Beholder – a love story crafted in a way that only Elissa Gabrielle can. In what is sure to be considered her greatest craftsmanship to date, Gabrielle effortlessly gives her readers an explosive experience of emotions through words and sounds that dance on paper. Think colors … vibrant colors that come alive in your mind as you experience the poetic prowess of her writing style. You don’t want to miss this one, coming in March 2014!

LaToya S. Watkins "Faith, Family, the Ph.D."
LaToya S. Watkins is a Ph.D. candidate at the University of Texas at Dallas. Her stories have appeared in numerous online and print publications, including Specter, Lunch Ticket: Antioch, Los Angeles, Kweli Journal, Ruminate Magazine, and Potomac Review. She is the author of two novels, In Love with Losers and the award-nominated, critically-acclaimed, Dorothy. She resides in Texas with her family.
I’ve been out of the loop for quite a while, and to be honest I don’t know where to start my justification for that. But since every finish has a starting point, I’ll start with my faith. In 2012, my father suffered a stroke. He had a bleed and doctors told my family that he would never wake up from the coma he fell into. He did. 45 days later, he woke up. But my family was forever changed. It is 2014 and my father is still slowly working to regain his abilities.  Most people see him as a cripple because he still can’t speak clearly and struggles with stiffness on the right side of his body. But we have faith. He will be restored. Completely.
Looking back on that today, I know our lives changed before his stroke. Our lives changed in 2010 when he announced to his church family that our Creator’s name is not God...
