Still: 'The Sea In Me' by Bahanur Nasya and Yilmaz Vurucu (2012)

Satellietgroep explores through arts and culture how the sea and waterways influence cities, people, communities and environments. Our aim is to enhance public and professional awareness on coastal transitions.
Satellietgroep developed the artist in residency program called 'Badgast' for research and exchange of local knowledge on a global level. We invite international artists and scientists to jointly develop and present research articulating a cultural, innovative and sustainable significance of the sea and its coasts by doing on-site research, engage with local communities, collaborate with local experts and connect to international networks. We interconnect coastal communities by connecting contemporary research and new works to historic and future coastal developments. We collaborate with scientific researchers, did research on Malta on the sea and migration for The Hague and were key note speaker on 'Culture & Coastal Transitions' at the international coastal conference 'Littoral 2012 - Coasts of Tomorrow' at Ostend, Belgium.

BADGAST
Satellietgroep programs Badgast since 2009. Badgast is a research based artist in residence program, outdoor Cinema with screenings and Talks, all concerning the sea and waterways. Badgast is located in the middle of the surfing village FAST, the Urban Beach Community at the hinge point of the boulevard and harbour in The Hague at Scheveningen. During the residency period new works – both conceptual and documentary - are developed that reflect upon the complex and layered coastal transitions and urban developments. With these works they contribute to the International Contemporary Collection On Coastal Transitions of Satellietgroep to be shared with broader audiences.
We started 2012 with the presentation 'Starring the Sea' at Kantine van de Visafslag by urbanist Jan de Graaf, video artist Eliane Esther Bots and sound artist Frouke Wiarda. Artists in residence at Badgast in 2012 were Frouke Wiarda, artist Esther Kokmeijer, photographer Eric van Straaten, designer Jannemieke Oostra, and video artist Henrik Lund Jørgensen (DK/SE).
Guestcurator for the Cinema were video artist Manon Bovenkerk and the film collective RGB.
Satellietgroep was invited as guestcurator for screeningprograms for Rewire Festival, Into The Great Wide Open Festival, Wrecks and Rafts at CBKU.
In collaboration with Domein voor Kunstkritiek (Domain for Artcritism) our Pool of Critics and Peer Review Group studied Badgast since 2011 and published 'Slow Journalism'.
FAST was awarded the VPRO Droomstad Public Award in 2012.
At Schiedam Satellietgroep is assigned to research the conversion of the 'Schreihuisje' at the Maasboulevard into a writers residency, using the skills and experiences we developed at Badgast.
With special thanks to the FAST surfing community, Stroom, the municipallity of The Hague, CBKU, Mooi Werk, Zeezeilschool Scheveningen, the community of fossil collectors on the Sand Engine, ship watchers, and many more.

NOW WAKES THE SEA (NWTS)
Starting in 2012 Satellietgroep exported the concept and methods of our embedded research based artist in residence program Badgast for the first time abroad. Landscape architect Ronald Boer and video artist Eliane Esther Bots developed from artists in resident at Badgast into co-curators for Satellietgroep - NWTS. We initiated the project 'Now Wakes The Sea' (NWTS), which involves research based artist in residence programs for artists / architects / filmmakers in coastal transition areas. We focus on countries surrounding the Black Sea and North Sea, encouraging artist to develop new works, to select existing works and to program travelling film festivals for public screenings and debates at venues, on both coasts.
First step in the cultural exchange project was the inspiring collaboration with European Cultural Association/Europist (TR) in the context of 'Sinopale 4, International Sinop Biennial' and the celebration of NLTR400 in 2012. Summer 2012 Maurice Bogaert (artist, NL), Bahanur Nasya (architect, TR/AT) and Yilmaz Vurucu (filmmaker. TR/CA/AT) were 6 weeks artists in residents for NWTS in Sinop on the Turkish coast of the Black Sea and in The Hague at the coast of the North Sea. The program resulted in a documentary and two conceptual videoworks, public screenings, artist talks, lectures and workshops in Sinop, Amsterdam, Vlieland, Belgium, The Hague and the exhibition at Siemens Sanat Istanbul, with contributions by Dutch and Turkish artists and filmmakers.
In preparation is the exchange in 2013 with Russia in the context of NLFR2013, Moldova and Georgia.

With special thanks to out partners of European Cultural Association/Europist, Museon, Gemak, Wander, Siemens Sanat Istanbul, Stroom, the municipallity of The Hague, SICA, ECF, SfA, The Dutch Embassy in Turkey, Turks Museum Nederland, the communities of Sinop and The Hague, and many more.

COASTAL COLLECTION
In close collaboration with international artists, scienists, co-curators and guestcurators Satellietgroep develops the International Contemporary Collection On Coastal Transitions.
Satellietgroep composes exhibitions, traveling film and expert meetings along the coastal communities in the various countries, thus also interconnecting these coastal communities.
We are very proud that artists and filmmakers share and even donate their works to enhance the Collection for public presentations.

One of the results of the artist in residency program 'Badgast' is the free open air photo exhibition 'Zeespiegel - Mirror on the Sea' on the new boulevard of The Hague at Scheveningen. Starting 2012 we opened the first part of the public photo exhibition 'Zeespiegel'. Composed by Satellietgroep with artworks of 25 artists in residence of Badgast, locals en professionals. Contributions about innovative coastal protection, including the Sand Engine, complete the tales about our relationship with the sea and make them accessible to everyone.
The exhibition will be completed in spring 2013 when the work on the new boulevard of Scheveningen is finished.
With the grant of Mondriaan Foundation we will start a pilot for digital mapping the 'Anthropogenic Coastal Atlas'.
