Wednesday 31 July

Next week our speaker is Philip Joyce FRPS DPAGB from Oxford, who will be presenting his talk: ......... The Story So Far.

In 2018 Philip visited BPS to discuss his pictures and approach to photography in a presentation called “Short Stories”. He looked at subjects including zoos, street life, meeting strangers, being a dog, gipsy communities and Pride events, amongst others. With a documentary sensibility Philip talked about his story-telling approach to a wide range of topics, how he engages with his subjects and adds a personal element through composition and viewpoint. “......... The story so far” continues the same approach and introduces new stories alongside familiar ones.
Below are half a dozen images from the evening to give you some idea of what to expect:

Robin Wilkinson
I have received an email from the wife of long-time BPS member Robin Wilkinson. Robin is the second longest serving member of the Society (after Pete McCloskey), having joined BPS in October 1973. Unfortunately we haven't seen Robin at club since we moved from Clifton, although I understand that until recently he has watched many of the meetings via Zoom. However, his wife informs me that Robin will sadly not be renewing his membership this year, as he is suffering from Alzheimer's which has progressed to the point where he feels he can no longer remain as a member. We wish both Robin and his wife, Vivienne, all the best for what the future holds in store for them.

Photographing The 2024 Paralympic Games

David Grierson, a long-standing member of BPS will be going to the 2024 Paralympic Games in an official capacity as an accredited photographer. This is a rare opportunity and reflects David’s passion and zeal for tackling life in adverse circumstances.
A year ago he was recovering from losing his second leg and had planned various portrait and printing workshops throughout 2024 to continue his interest in photography. Then in December 2023 he discovered the Limbpower charity who help people with prosthetics and limb differences. Following talks with them and discussing his interest in photography they asked him if he would photograph their sports day at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. David continues the story……

"There I met the ParalympicGB media team who had provided all the coaches for the sports that the amputees could try for the first time on the day. At the end of the day I was approached by the Head of Media who asked if she could see the images I had taken and that I was downloading to the Limbpower social media pages. Her comment was that I should join the ParaGB media team in Paris. I was then given a programme of events I could go to in the UK to practice my photographic skills for each event. These included Wheelchair Rugby, the Paratriathlon, Blind Football, Amputee Football, and Paraequestrian events.

I shall be in Paris for the opening ceremony on the Place de la Concorde. Following this I have been planning to photograph different sports at varying venues during the day then be at the Stade de France in the evening for the athletics
I’ve set up parasportphotos.com to upload images I take during each day. Images will also go to ParalympicGB media and PA Images for possible sales."

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Two more of our members, Sandie Cox and Christine Mallett, have been awarded their FIAP EFIAP/Silver distinctions - congratulations to both.

Last week I congratulated BPS members who had done well in the recent Midland Salon of International Photography. Unfortunately I missed out Simon Caplan who had two images accepted in the Open PDI section which included a PSA Ribbon - well done and sorry for the omission.
Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
