Wednesday 10 July

Next week our speaker is Stan Farrow FRPS EFIAP DPAGB, who will be beaming his talk into the clubrooms, via Zoom, all the way from North of the Border in Fife.

Stan will be presenting his talk called Photo Art, and says of the evening:

I describe myself as a creative digital photographer.
When I took early retirement a few years ago, I returned to university to study Art History, and I spent three years on that. Nowadays I enjoy applying my interest in modern art to my photographic work which has been ongoing since childhood.

I was born in Teddington in Middlesex and I spent my childhood days in West London. I went to University in St Andrews, and then stayed on in Scotland, at first teaching Biology in schools. Latterly I returned to the University of St Andrews as Associate Director of Admissions and as Director of the Access Centre. I took early retirement in 2005.

In my presentation I show the inspiration behind some of my creative photographic artwork, with details of how it is produced. I am always far more interested in turning my photography into art, rather than producing work for competition purposes, although often the two do go hand-in hand. I do greatly enjoy using Photoshop creatively to make my digital art, especially still-life work with layers of texture. Having said that, much of my work is simple to replicate at home with few digital skills whatsoever.

Here are a few images from the talk:

DI Group
The next Digital Imaging Group Meeting will be on Monday 8 July at 7.30pm, at the clubrooms and on Zoom

Just a reminder, there is still time to get your images to us. Last month we enjoyed a wide variety of inspiring images and projects. Lots of food for thought! It’s your images that make these evenings such a success so please keep sending them in.

These informal meetings are a great opportunity to share your work with other members or simply to gain some inspiration.

If you would like some advice, to share a project you have been working on, or simply want to share some of your images outside the competition environment, then please send your images to dig@bristolphoto.org.uk by email or WeTransfer by 5.00pm on Saturday 6th July so they can be included.

Please number your images in the order you would like them to be viewed and resize to the usual competition size, not essential but helps to keep the file sizes manageable.

DI Challenge - Still Time To Have A Go
DI Challenge – July 2024

About a month ago I had indicated at the DI meeting that I will set a challenge to ALL BPS members to use their expertise to take an unedited image and to improve it as best as they can. They can take the challenge further to make a creative image if they wish.

Click on the following link to download the instructions and images:

Click on the word ‘Download‘ at the top left corner of the screen to download the whole folder ‘DI Challenge Folder 24 v2’ which has a pdf file of instructions and images in both jpg and raw formats onto your computer.

The intention is to not only to test your skills but also to share with others what works, how easy or difficult the techniques are. This challenge may also serve as an indicator on the level of interest within the members for practical workshops in the new season of BPS programme when DI meetings will be bimonthly leaving every other month free for practical work if there is sufficient interest. Although at the DIG meetings the members share their work and knowledge, practical hands-on work is often the best way to further improve your skills.

I look forward to members taking up the challenge and also send me comments on the challenge as well as the interest in hands-on workshops.

Appeal on behalf of Photographers with Disabilities (PWD)
Photographers with Disabilities (PWD) is a charity that aims to improve the wellbeing of people with disabilities via the medium of photography. Many of you will be aware that BPS and its members have supported PWD(*) in various ways since 2021, by:
  • Allowing PWD to use BPS’s premises for their weekly sessions
  • BPS members host the weekly sessions, most notably Mike Martin, Steve Field.
  • Providing behind- the scenes support through BPS members becoming Trustees, currently Nigel Owen (PWD Vice-Chairperson) and David Alderson (PWD Treasurer). Others have been involved in the past.
PWD currently find themselves in a bit of difficulty as they desperately need additional trustees to fulfil the requirements of the Charities Commission. In addition, they urgently need extra funding to cover the cost of Community transport (currently their only income is donations from clubs that Mike has given presentations to and the weekly attendance fee for members). Without both matters being addressed the Charity will have to fold.

So, if you are willing and able to step up as a trustee, or want to join the weekly meetings as an associate member (£5 per week, £10 on days with an external model) or full member (membership is £25 pa) please get in touch with Nigel Owen, David Alderson or Mike Martin at Unit 13 or email Nigel on  vicechair@photographerswithdisabilities.org

(*) BPS does not provide direct financial support to PWD.

FIAP Black & White Biennial
Biennials are one of the most important events offered by FIAP. They are organized every two years in a different member country. Even years for  Black and White and Nature Biennials, odd years for the Colour Biennial. This year the Black and White event is being held in India and prints from photographers across Great Britain were submitted to the PAGB for selection to represent the Nation, with the top 10 going forward. Two of the ten prints chosen come from BPS members - Mike Martin and Jay Hallsworth, so huge congratulations to both and good luck in the judging which takes place on 11 August.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
It's not often that I publish all the pictures by a member in an international. But in this case, I'm making an exception as the exhibition in question is the Edinburgh International Print Exhibition and it is one in the toughest anywhere to get an acceptance in, let alone multiple acceptances - which is just what Derwood Pamphilon has done, with three accepted, including an HM for one of them. The pictures are reproduced below:
