Next Wednesday, we welcome Mark Pain to Unit 13, when he will present An Evening with Mark Pain.
World class sports photography is Mark's specialty. He is a multi-award winning sports photographer with over 25 years' experience and international recognition. Covering major events worldwide from the Olympic Games to the Ryder Cup, and from football and rugby World Cups to World Championship athletics, Mark has worked at the top of his profession for many years and was Chief Sports Photographer of the Mail On Sunday for over twenty years.

|
He captures Premier League football action most weeks, as well as taking portraits and features of the biggest and best stars in the world of sport, working for both editorial and corporate clients.
Having won many competitions and been highly commended on numerous occasions, including as a sports finalist in the World Press Photo 1998, Mark was named as the Sports Photographer of the Year in 2005 and 2011 at the British Press Awards.
He was named as the British Airways Olympic Photographer Of The Year 2012 at the prestigious UK Guild Of Picture Editors Awards.
In 2011 Mark successfully launched the first dedicated Sports Photography School in the UK, and in 2013 became a Nikon UK Ambassador.

Last Wednesday saw the first try out of the "hybrid" system for a meeting that was not one using computer-based images, ie we were attempting to Zoom a print evening. This presented a number of technical issues which Matt and his team have been attempting to resolve over the last few weeks, especially taking into consideration that we were trying to work with the equipment that we already have (hybrid meetings will hopefully not be a long-lasting feature of our programme).
It now transpires that we have two major problems, firstly the one of sound - the sound produced by the microphone worn by the speaker has not been clear, being both low volume and muffled. The second was with the sharpness of the actual images, these images were produced using the camera that was previously used to send pictures to the wall mounted monitors and for the large part had always worked satisfactorily. There was no reason to believe that the quality of the images produced by this camera would be any different when its job was changed to that of sending a signal to the PC for onward transmission via Zoom, and we did in fact check this with the company that installed the new equipment. However, it now looks as if that thought was a little wide of the mark.
So, what are we doing about it? We have engaged the services of a specialist company to urgently look fully at what we have installed and come up with a suitable plan to improve things. Once their recommendations have been received, we will (as a BPS Council) view the cost implications and take a fairly quick decision as to what we should do and implement that decision.
I would say, though, that some of the comments that flew about on Wednesday were at best not particularly considered and at worst downright rude. Below are reproduced a small sample of what flew about over the Zoom-waves:
- A lot of noise and low volume
- Can’t hear and image blurred!!
- Please focus camera!!
- Why oh why cant we get the presentation right
- Message to the committee. Buy a new mike please
- David’s voice was very clear, which suggests it may be a problem with the mike. Silly thought - but it does have fresh batteries in it? Was at another club on Monday and the mike battery went flat part way through the evening
- Buy new camera, I thought we had bought a new one!!
- What we are seeing is awful Any long distant members are unlikely to stay!!
We understand the frustration, we feel it as well, but remember people are working hard to try to get it right. Your feedback on quality is welcomed, but can we try to be constructive rather than destructive, and please avoid the temptation to add comments that are bordering on being rude.
We are doing everything we can to correct things, but if there is anyone out there that has some knowledge/expertise in these areas, please step forward and try to help.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION - Early Start 27 October |
ADVANCED WARNING - EARLY START - Wednesday 27 October
It was previously announced in issue 455 that the presentation to BPS, who won the award for the most successful club in the deferred 2020 MASTERS OF PRINT earlier this year, would take place on 13 October. Because of prior a commitment by one of the presentation team, this has now been postponed until 27 October. |
Photographic Society of America (PSA) - Competitions
After a long gap the BPS council members have decided it’s about time we regained some international recognition befitting a club of our standing.
Whilst these are Club competitions, the best individual authors will receive individual awards.
To that end I have registered Bristol Photographic Society to participate in the following competitions.
PDI
- Open Colour
- Open Mono
- Nature ** NB the PSA rules are changing from 1 Jan 2022, so the competition will operate under two sets of Nature rules. Details: click here
- Travel
- Creative
These are run over 3 rounds – the highest placed clubs get promoted to the next division in each annual cycle.
For each of the round we require 6 images from different authors. The first-round deadline is 15 November – so watch out for a request to use your image(s).
Prints
There are 5 categories for un-mounted prints. As with PDIs these are run over 3 rounds - the highest placed clubs get promoted to the next division in each annual cycle.
The print competitions run with up to four images from different authors in each round – timing is a bit more critical for these as we have to allow for international postage
- Large Color [ 11x14 to 16x20], effectively A3
- Large Monochrome [ 11x14 to 16x20], effectively A3
- Small Color [SC, 5x7 to 8½ x12], up to A4
- Small Monochrome [SM, 5x7 to 8½ x12], up to A4
- Creative Altered Reality [CAR, 5x7 to 16x20, color or mono]. Either A4 or A3
NOTE: prints are to be un-mounted. Anyone wishing to participate but not wishing to print your own entry, that shouldn’t be a barrier - let me have a full resolution digital file and I’ll print for you J
As we haven’t entered since 2013, we should have a healthy pool of images to draw upon, the only restrictions being that
- an image cannot be used more than once in an individual competition (for example an image used as colour could be re-entered as mono in subsequent rounds but not re-entered into the colour section)
- a print image cannot be resubmitted in a different class in the same year
- any image that receives an award (1st, 2nd, 3rd, HM) in any competition cannot be used in any further competitions (other than the end of year competition for awarded images).
IMPORTANT - IMAGE RELEASES
Being an American organisation they are very strict on photographers granting permission to them to enable them to judge and share (winning) images. They therefore insist that any photographer whose image is used, must complete an image release PRIOR to submission.
It makes sense therefore for anyone interested in being considered to complete the attached release form. I shall obviously chase anyone where we want a specific image if you haven’t already completed a release form.
Sorry if this sounds a bit bureaucratic – it’s their rules! And, it shouldn’t be too onerous as each release covers usage of all / any images used for 3 years.
To get ready please either:
- print, sign and hand me a copy at Unit 13 at one of the weekly meetings
- print, sign, photograph or scan (or add an electronic signature, using a tablet and pen, for example), and return to me by email
- sign a copy in Unit 13 at one of the weekly meetings
DEADLINE FOR FIRST ROUND: 15 November for PDI, 10 November for Prints
NB. For the print sections our internal deadline is obviously earlier to allow time for prints to be sent!
This is a great opportunity to benchmark yourself and BPS against some of the best photographers and clubs globally.
Thanks everyone for your support.
