January 1, 2022
Welcome to 2022!

As we look forward to a more productive, happier, and peaceful new year, tragedy has hit Colorado with massive wildfires. The links below provide a current overview of the situation, along with advice and information to help us survive emergencies and disasters, with special links that include the safety of household pets and even large animals such as horses. Notably, there have been no deaths reported.

1. Wildfires in Colorado

"[Hundreds of] homes were destroyed after wind-fueled wildfires swept through parts of Boulder County, Colorado (this week), and forced tens of thousands of residents from their homes."

While the fires in Colorado are expected to diminish as winds subside, "...snowfall will help bring an end to the fires," according to a statement from the White House.

The following site has many links and advice for those of us who have pets. It's important to include our animals in our written plans for emergencies.

5. Keeping Your Cat Active and Healthy

Indoor cats of all ages should have toys for batting around, chasing and wrestling. The most enjoyable toys are those that allow interaction between people and their cats. These may include the "red dot" laser (just be careful not to shine it into their eyes), prey-like toys, such as wands with feathers or soft material shaped like a snake, and furry toys that look like mice. This gives kitty the opportunity to stalk and hunt.

For cats who enjoy catnip, toys with the herb placed inside are more fun. You might also find catnip plants growing in flower pots at garden or pet shops. For the cat who likes to chew on plants, catnip is a lot safer than most houseplants. You can also try "cat grass," often sold in pet shops or pet departments in some stores.

Cats of all ages enjoy scratching posts, either vertical, horizontal, or slanted. Also try different materials, such as sisal rope, carpet, cardboard, or wood, like two by fours (or even small but stout tree branches) that have been sanded and finished.

Thinking about how cats live in the wild will help you to create an indoor environment that models outdoor features and activities, such as tree-climbing, running along fences, or perching in high places so they can watch what's happening in their territory. Simply duplicate outdoor conditions by rearranging furniture, or by creating window perches, cat trees and setups they can climb.
