Cleve Jones in conversation with David Talbot

Hey West Portal,
A few weeks ago I was introduced to the legendary Cleve Jones by a friend, and when I asked if he was interested in speaking at BookShop West Portal, he agreed immediately. I said, "We have this series we're hosting inspired by the essay collection What We Do Now: Standing Up for Your Values in Trump's America. Do you feel that's something you can speak to?"
Poor, foolish Susan. Now that I've read When We Rise: My Life in the Movement, I fully understand the extent to which Cleve Jones has spent his life determining What We Do Now, and acting on it. Cleve is not just a witness to history, he's made history. His book, BTW, knocked me out.
He tells his story in a very personal, very candid way. Cleve's history isn't polished to perfection. It doesn't read like a textbook. It all stays very human, yet so very impressive and moving. It is a huge privilege to hear this man speak.
And, I am so grateful to our friend David Talbot for coming back to join Cleve in this conversation. I keep promising to stop monopolizing David's evenings, but I appear to be lying.
We packed every inch of the bookstore for our first What We Do Now event, and I don't think I'm exaggerating to say it galvanized our community.
I want to continue bringing diverse voices into the bookstore--I have big plans--and the best way you can help make it happen is to spread the word and show up for these events.
