The Lion's Roar
St. Mark's Episcopal Church, Chenango Bridge, NY
December 2015

From the Church Guy
I admit it...I'm both excited and proud.

Lisa Busby will be ordained a priest on Saturday, December 12, 2015, at 3:00 p.m.  The service will take place at St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in New Berlin, about a 40-minute drive from St. Mark's.  (It's one of the three churches she serves, along with Emmanuel in Norwich, and St. Matthew's in South New Berlin.)

We at St. Mark's loved her year with us in her field education experience.  She was a wonderful presence, and we will always wish her well.

Everyone is invited to this ordination, and she very much hopes to see lots of friends from St. Mark's.  (If you are interested in sharing rides, talk to me, and I'll organize something.)

Months ago, she asked me to be the preacher at this service, and I was humbled and honored to accept.  We as a parish have had a hand in the formation of someone who will serve the church well and faithfully in years to come.  And we had fun doing it.

I admit it...I'm both excited and proud!

CHRISTMAS AT ST. MARK'S
Christmas Eve, December 24, 2015

4:00 p.m. Children's Eucharist.  This service is designed to be welcoming to our smallest children.  It's noisy and fun, and short -- just over a half hour.  Father Mark tells the Christmas story with sound effects provided by the children.  And we have a celebration of the Eucharist.  All are welcome, even if you're an adult!

7:00 p.m. Festive Eucharist.  The full Eucharist is a festive celebration of the birth of the Christ Child, the Word made flesh.

9:00 p.m. Choral Eucharist.  This full Eucharist is a festive celebration of the birth of the Christ Child, the Word made flesh.  Our choir is with us to enhance our musical experience.

(Note:  This year, there will not be a service on Friday, Christmas Day.)

 St. Mark's Table, Christmas Edition
Join us on Tuesday, December 15 for the Christmas Edition of the Table!  We begin at 6:00 p.m. with a potluck meal downstairs.  No reservations needed...just arrive with a dish for the common table and your own place setting.  After we eat together, we'll adjourn to the church sanctuary, where Paula and Mark Giroux will lead us in singing old favorite Christmas carols.  It's always an enjoyable event in the holiday season.

 A Youth Outing to Syracuse
The youth group of St. Mark's is heading up to Carousel Mall (a.k.a. Destiny) in Syracuse on Sunday, December 6, after church.  The teens will bring a sack lunch and we'll eat at St. Mark's at 11:30 before going north.

Part of the trip will be for fun (there are a number of attractions at the mall, besides the pleasure of walking around), and the teens are also welcome to do some Christmas shopping.  We'll need a couple more adults (in addition to Father Mark and Eric & Sabrina) to serve as drivers and chaperones.

 Sunday School News
Pageant rehearsals for those with speaking parts began in November, now as we enter the month of December we will have practices for ALL children interested in being in the pageant on Saturday mornings (5th, 12th & 19th) from 9:30 - 10:30 a.m.  Everyone should be at the one on the 19th.  The pageant is on December 20, during the second service.  Children in the pageant need to be at the church on the 20th by 9:30 a.m.

Our Junior Youth group met last month and brainstormed some mission projects and fun events they would like to do.  The first one is to provide Christmas gifts for some children in need, and to get the money to do so they decided on having a bake sale.  On Sunday, December 6, the children will hold a bake sale at both coffee hours.  Children that are able to stay after pageant rehearsal on December 5 will help make items for the bake sale.  Those that can't stay are asked to make a few items at home and bring them in Sunday morning.

On December 12, from noon until 3 p.m. we will offer an afternoon of Christmas fun for those in Pre-K thru second grade.  Goodies, games and crafts are on the agenda - maybe a short movie!  Sign up sheet is posted on the bulletin board at the side entrance.  Adult (or teen) helpers are needed.

 CHOW Needs Continue
Because of the growth of proverty in Broome County, we are being sent more and more clients for our CHOW pantry on Tuesdays and Thursdays.  And the main warehouse, being squeezed, is not able to send us as much food as they did in the past.  So we churches need to step up to feed the needy in Christ's name.

Your donations of food for our pantry continue to be vital.  And we often have to go shopping in mid-week to purchase more food when the pantry runs low.  Any cash donations are therefore also welcome!  If you wish to donate, make sure you write the word "CHOW" on the memo line of your check made out to St. Mark's, and we'll use it for our pantry right here.

Big thanks, by the way, to our crew of hard-working volunteers, led by Jan Thompson!

We're Feeding the Hungry Right after Christmas
The Canteen on the fourth Sunday of the month is ours.  We send a team and food to Trinity Episcopal in Binghamton at 11:00 to feed the needy.  The fourth Sunday of December is the 27th, two days after Christmas.  It's a busy time, but we hope, as always, the people of St. Mark's will come through and sign up to help.  What better gift to the Christ Child could there be?

 Book Club Update
Our December selection is "17 Carnations" by Andrew Morton.  One man aimed to rule the world, the other was ruled by his heart.  The unlikely alliance between the Nazi dictator and the Duke of Windsor, led to one of the biggest cover-ups in history.  It is a compelling story of political intrigue, illicit romance, family fueds and secret plots.
