Breathe life into our Facebook group and win a poster space on the on the London Underground to show your work.
It may have come to your attention recently that Facebook are either upgrading the old facebook groups into the new design, or they will be 'archived'.

Well this has come as 'a big smack in the face' for Art Below who have had a facebook group since 2006 and have gradually built a healthy and active following of a few thousand.  Now, thanks to Facebook 'archiving' our group we have a group of exactly 10 members!! So First of all I want to say a genuine 'thank you' to those 10 dedicated members for hanging on in there.

So in an attempt to claw our way back and to co-inside with Social Media Week, we have decided to launch a new initiative to breathe life and love into this once powerful mother ship of social media!  For every 1000 new members, Art Below will award 1 free poster space (1m x 1.5m) on the London Underground.  To grab a chance of winning that poster space,  simply become a member of the Art Below facebook group and upload a piece of your own artwork onto the Wall.  We are open to all creative backgrounds including design, fashion, illustration, sculpture, photography and any other ones that I've missed out.

For every 1000 new group members we will set a loose theme, starting with the theme of THE DIGITAL AGE.  Here's one I did earlier! We will take into account how many 'likes' each image gets, but it wont be the central deciding factor that will persuade our judges (to be announced) if you are the winner.  As well as being awarded a 1 meter x 1.5 meter poster space in a  London Underground station for 2 weeks to show your work, you will also receive a A2 lambda print of your winning design, you will  be announced as the winner on www.artbelow.org.uk, on our media partners sites including ArtLyst.com and of course on the Art Below facebook group site!

Live Painting by Johan Andersson at 'Underneath' 16th February @ FLORIPA
How much would you pay to see up and coming acts perform? How much would you pay to see your favourite band? How much would you pay to see your friend or partner serenaded on stage? Come and join us at Underneath, powered by Givey as part of Social Media Week London.
‘Underneath’ is going to feature some of the most exciting up-and-coming musicians where you can pay what you think the acts are worth seeing live. The money won't go to the acts - it will go to their chosen charities. In addition, a canvas will be created by Johan Andersson live on the night and be auctioned off to the highest bidder.

Acts confirmed for the event so far include:
  • James Craise – a finalist in the Pizza Express competition and entry into the MTV Unsigned Act nominations. James has performed alongside Robbie Williams and was part of the ACM Gospel Choir to make it into the BBC’s Last Choir Standing. He is currently touring the UK and working on a debut album
  • Josh Record – A regular on the London gig circuit, Josh is making a name for himself as a singer/songwriter and has recently returned from recording sessions in North America and Sweden
All you need to do is make sure you have a Givey account and come on the night with some friends.

Givey is a new social donation platform that allows you to donate upwards of £1 via SMS, Twitter or the Internet. Thanks to our partners at MissionFish, all you have to do is link your PayPal account and you can start making donations. When you sign up for Givey you are asked to accept GiftAid on all donations. This will ensure that the charities you donate to receive the full amount they deserve.

Art In MIND @ The Maynard, Exeter would love to invite you to participate in the forthcoming exhibition to raise funds for the Mind creative therapies fund, Mindful.
They have held two previous exhibitions in 2008 and 2010 turning over in excess of £50,000 at each
weekend event.

Inspired by Stuart Semple’s exhibition in September for Mind (http://mindfulofart.com/), they would like
to raise a substantial sum for this cause. All work will be for sale and the 30% commission will go to
the Mind creative therapies fund with the balance being paid to the artist (70%).This applies to any
artist invited via Stuart Semple. It would be very exciting for the West Country to exhibit some
major artists, who do not normally exhibit in the area.

They are launching a website shortly, www.art-in-mind.co.uk, which will feature all exhibiting artists.
We will be happy to arrange transportation from London to Exeter, (and return of items if not sold).

Please do email Helen Reynolds if you would like to participate and for any further information.

Sarah Maple's 'It's A Girl!' At the Aubin Gallery 9th Feb - 9th March
Following on from ‘Art of Angel’ Sarah will be launching her first solo show in 4 years ‘It’s
A Girl ‘ at the Aubin Gallery in East London from 9th February – 9th March 2012.

Maple often uses herself as protagonist, becoming a warts and all mirror to contemporary
society and pop culture through the device of self-portraiture. Her new work includes a
series of such photographic self-portraits, highlighting the insidious gender disparities in-
herent in classic children’s tales. Roles are reversed: Cinderella wins a seat in Parliament,
Sleeping Beauty scrubs up for open heart surgery, whilst Belle - seen shouting encourage-
ment at the players from the bench - manages a football team.
Maple has a lightness of touch that makes these messages not just palatable but fun; serious
work with a comedic twist.
