Is your cat's food on a recall list?

How to avoid the worst cat foods

Purina Sued for Natural Claims
The lawsuit claims Purina markets their pet foods as “Natural” when they contain synthetic ingredients.

Cats need moisture in their diet
Eating a diet consisting only of dry kibble typically leads to an early death due to kidney failure. Cats are known for drinking only small amounts of water. In a natural setting, these carnivores obtain moisture from their prey, not from dry matter.

Warning about feeding your cats:
Never EVER try to make your cat a vegan. It will die!

I repeat this caveat in every issue for the benefit of those who may not have absorbed the critical nature of this warning.

The Fattening Feeding Mistake Many Cat Owners Make
The majority of cats in the US are now obese and many are also developing diabetes. Both conditions are related to this common feeding mistake that can lead to chronic inflammation and degenerative disease.

Carbohydrate-dense meals contribute to obesity and diabetes.

1. Is Your Cat Happy?

Happy cats will play with their toys and with other people and cats. Stressed cats tend to hide, avoid interaction, and ignore or refuse to play.

Snuggles, Cuddles, Lap Sits and Co-Sleeping.
You'll know your cat is happy if they show affection to you and want to interact with you. And they will be very vocal, keep themselves well groomed, and reflect a healthy appetite.

Speaking of Happy...How About Some Catnip?
Catnip, renowned for bringing an adrenaline-like rush to even the most docile cats, has actually been discovered to have distinct benefits. Researchers in Japan have found that when cats dig into catnip, high amounts of strong insect repellents are released, indicating that the addictive behavior of our furry friends is protecting them from pests.

Is Your Cat Busy at Night?
Cat behavior at night is sometimes called the night crazies and may cause lack of sleep for cat owners. If your cat won’t let you sleep, there are things you can do to help.

Boxes Seem to Be the Universal Happy Place
That cats are attracted to boxes is generally attributed to the fact that they feel safer when squeezed into small spaces, but it might also be able to tell us something about feline visual perception.

How Long Do Vaccines Really Last?
By Dr. Karen Shaw Becker • 23 Oct 2023

Is it necessary to regularly repeat parvovirus, distemper and adenovirus vaccines? Are there some pets who shouldn't receive them at all? Know why vaccinations aren't always protective against disease and what you need to know before you request another shot for your cat (or dog).

When to say No to Steroids
Wildly overprescribed by veterinarians, steroids can do more harm than good and put your pet at risk for irreversible side effects, even with short-term use.
Steroids may relieve symptoms but they do nothing to address the underlying cause of the disease.

"I use a variety of effective drug-free remedies with steroidal properties, including plant sterols, the herbs forsythia4 and bupleurum, ginseng, cordyceps and licorice," says Dr. Becker.

Natural anti-inflammatory protocols can also be instituted during this time, including proteolytic enzymes, curcumin, cat's claw, boswellia, and omega-3 fatty acids (DHA/EPA), for a synergistic effect.

Don’t Blame the Egyptians
Scholars have long believed that the ancient Egyptians were the first to keep cats as pets, starting around 3,600 years ago. But genetic and archaeological discoveries made over the past 15 years have revised this scenario—and have generated fresh insights into both the ancestry of the domestic cat and how its relationship with humans evolved.
