Hello, Firstname

Wednesday 5 August - Zoom
On the 5 August we will be having a third international zoom talk, 2nd time from America.  Steve Gettle will be talking and showing us his images taken from all over the world, accompanied by some images by Nicole Sudduth. They will be hosting this zoom session so in order to get the invite to join in we (the club members) need to register (see below).

The Story Behind the Images
Have you ever seen an image and wondered... "how did they do that?" - "what is the story behind that picture?" Well now is your chance to find out. In this custom made program designed especially for the Bristol Photographic Society, Steve will answer those questions and more about the images you choose to hear more about.

Steve Gettle
Steve is a nature photographer. He photographs the natural world because he loves it. He has been passionate about nature since he was a small child, and is fortunate to have been able to build his life around nature and his photography. His cameras have taken him around the world and shown him wondrous things that he could hardly have even dreamt of. It is truly his privilege to share his work and experiences with you.

Nicole Sudduth
Nicole is an avid nature photographer who specializes in photographing wildflowers, insects, amphibians and birds. She has been photographing wildlife for over 15 years and enjoys sharing the wonders of nature and inspiring others in exploring that passion. Through her images she connects the story of wildlife and habitat, showing interactions and inter-dependencies that are sometimes missed. Her images and stories have been featured in publications of the National Wildlife Federation, Audubon and other nonprofit organizations.

You will need to pre-register to join the meeting - please follow this  link to register.

PLEASE REMEMBER - YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO JOIN IN THE MEETING UNLESS YOU HAVE PRE-REGISTERED.

Once you have registered, you will receive a confirmation email which will contain all the information and links that you need to join the meeting. Log in will be about 10 minutes before the meeting starts.

One thing to recognize is that this is a “webinar” not a meeting where you see 50 faces. The attendees will be able to see and hear the speakers but cannot speak. Instead, to ask questions, they will type into the Q&A box and Steve (Gettle) will moderate that. Additionally, you will be able to use the chat box (at the bottom of your screen) to converse amongst ourselves too.

Follow this link to visit Steve's website.

Mike Bigger
Over the last month or so, I have included items of Mike's photographic kit for sale, the majority of which have now been sold. Following the wishes of Mike, his son & daughter (Sean & Louise) have donated all of the proceeds to BPS; this has been topped up by a very generous donation to the Society (by a member), in Mike's memory and the grand total now stands at £3439.

There are still a few items left to sell, these include the Epson Stylus Photo R3000 Printer (details) and Epson Perfection V750 Pro Flatbed Scanner (details) along with a pristine Billingham S4 camera bag, this retails at just under £250 and you can see details by following this link. Please contact me if you would like to make a serious offer for any of these - bpsnewsletter@bristolphoto.org.uk.

Martin Addison - Making Panels in Lightroom

Thanks to David Grierson for this.

Bristol Salon 2020
I know that I can sometimes be accused of banging on about the Bristol Salon a bit too often, but Andrew (Marker) has recently been showing the 2020 Salon presentation via Zoom to clubs that we would have normally travelled to for a live performance. Last week he "took" it to Dorchester Camera Club, following which a glowing report appeared on their website and I felt it only fair that we all bask in a bit of reflected glory, so have reproduced it in full below:

Review - Bristol International Salon, 20 Jul 2020

A review by Jane Tearle - The Bristol International Salon, Presentation via Zoom, 20 July 2020I came away from watching the Zoom presentation of the 74th Bristol International Salon with a wealth of impressions and protestations to try harder! Congratulations to all our members, and those from Truro Club who joined us for the evening, who gained acceptances and especially those who received awards. With nearly 8,500 entries from 758 authors from 60 countries is it any wonder we think ‘can I get a picture into Bristol?’ Anything is possible, you have to try. My first success was there..a Bronze Medal before I even knew there were such things…so each year I try again!

With seven categories to cover, with both print and digital, there was a wealth of images to indulge ourselves whatever our favourite genre might be. The quality of the work was extremely high throughout; the organisers have a full time job to make the whole salon run smoothly and the judges have an even harder task to assess and pick their awards.

My favourite genre being travel, with a single digital section, gave me plenty to contemplate for whenever I might manage to travel again. All images involving people in their environment, whether the street, in their homes or on transport. Many more travel images appeared in the open print and digital categories.

The opening sequence gave us three images from our own members with motor sport taking centre stage followed by variety of other sports to dance and landscapes. Creative composites are a familiar genre and are produced in increasingly inventive ways. I admire them for their imaginative input as well as their skills in compositing. Architectural compositions were dramatic and the number of absolutely beautiful spiral staircases, from all over the world, was eye catching. I want to see them for real!

Work done in the studio produced beautiful as well as gritty portraits; dancers in delicate and harmonious poses. I didn’t notice many still life. The big outdoors gave us stunning landscapes at home and abroad as well as the glory of the African grasslands and various icy covered snowscapes with their beautiful wildlife, be it cheetahs or polar bears. The images of birds and butterflies showing us their behaviour were superb. The number of wild waves of enormous height and strength were memorable as were the interactions of animals with each other. How many hours had the photographer waited for these to occur I wonder?

I could go on! Save to say the Bristol Salon, as always, provided us with an evening of indulgence in our hobby through other people’s work. And with it the inspiration to go the next step ourselves; looking to improve our work but always with the proviso of making sure we enjoy it all!

Thank you to Andrew Marker for bringing it to us via Zoom and with the Stephen Jones making it all happen our end!

~ Jane Tearle

PAGB Lockdown Archive
PAGB e-news is inviting all readers to submit images of their Lockdown experience to be selected for what will become an historic permanent archive and a valuable record of the varied experiences of amateur photographers and their reaction to the pandemic.

The theme is “My Lockdown Photography” and your pictures may record your life during this period, document some of the things you may have seen or simply be examples of your photographic activities whilst in isolation and what inspired you. Each image must have been made between 1 March and 30 June 2020.

A selection of 100 will be compiled into a permanent gallery accessible online and the images will also be used to form a show, suitable to fill an evening, which Clubs will be able to download from the PAGB Recorded Lecture Service.

Maximum 4 images per photographer. Each file should be titled “Your Name_Title of Image” and you should supply your photographic honours, the month each was taken, your Club and Federation. Whilst it isn’t essential, you are invited also to provide up to 30 words for each image explaining its significance, your reason for making it or the circumstances in which you took it. The story may be as important as the photograph.

Each image should be no greater than 1600px horizontal x 1200px vertical, jpeg format in the sRGB colour space.

The images and other information should be e-mailed to rod@creative-camera.co.uk to arrive by Saturday 15th August 2020.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
