President's Cup & Not The Garmston Bowl Competitions - Extension
CLOSING DATE EXTENDED - NOW MIDNIGHT SATURDAY 5 JUNE

Entry to the panel competitions has been somewhat modest so there is still time for a late entry, particularly to the President’s Cup. So as to allow those who might have considered an entry, but have not yet pursued it, the entry deadline has been extended to midnight on Saturday 5th June.  Have a go!

PAGB Inter-Federation PDI Competition - Support BPS
As mentioned last week; BPS has 13 images from 8 members selected to represent the WCPF in the PAGB Inter-federation PDI competition. Judging will be broadcast live via Zoom. Anyone wishing to watch and support our members and the WCPF need to PRE-REGISTER in ADVANCE using the link below.

After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the meeting. The Zoom link will open at 10am

Judging of the Open Section will commence at 10:30 am, with the awards for the Open section selected after the Open section Judging.

The Judging of the Nature Section, will be carried out following a break for lunch with the individual awards being selected after the Nature section judging.

Creative Competition - Bob Faris Trophy
The closing date for the Creative Competition is less than two weeks away – Wednesday, 16 June.
Coronavirus put paid to the competition last year, but we are now hoping for a bumper crop of entries to celebrate the late Bob Faris who instigated the competition and designed and donated the splendid trophy.
Now could be your chance to wrest that trophy from the hands of Barry Mead, who will not be competing but will be the judge.
As with all our competitions this year, all entries must be digital images. Here are the rules:
For this competition, a submitted image must have originated as a photographic image or images, produced either in camera or by post processing. All images must be original and may not incorporate elements produced by anyone else. Artwork or computer graphics generated by the entrant may be incorporated so long as the original photographic content predominates. Digital skills should be seen as the tools to compose photographic images into one new single image. The final composition will show the photographer’s artistic interpretation.
This is an Open competition, with no levels of entry.
Images may have been entered into any previous club competition and may be entered into any subsequent bi-monthly or annual competition, other than this one.
The Trophy winner will not be eligible to enter the next two Creative Competitions.
Each entrant may submit up to three images.
Please submit your images in the usual way to competitions@bristolphoto.org.uk by 16 June. We hope to see everything from the profoundly deranged to the delicately strange.  Penguins are not obligatory.

New Rules For Bi-Monthly Competitions
Following the call for comments on the competition arrangements and after discussion in the Council, we are changing the rules. The changes will apply from the start of the new competition season in September, when we hope to be back, live, in Unit 13.
The main aim of these changes is to reduce the overall entry to a number that will allow judges to comment thoroughly on images without over-extending the evening or requiring the entry to be culled. We have also responded to comments regarding the Prescribed topic.
The maximum number of images submitted by Intermediate and Advanced entrants will be reduced to two, while entry to the Prescribed challenge will be optional and open to all. The Club entry will be kept at three to give those members as much opportunity and feedback as possible.
As before, changes will be kept under review.
The following rules will apply in the Print and PDI bi-monthly competitions:
  1. Club entrants may submit three images. One of these images may be for the optional Prescribed topic. Points gained for the Prescribed topic will accrue to the entrant’s Club score.
  2. Intermediate entrants may submit two images, one of which may be for the optional Prescribed topic. Points gained for the Prescribed topic will accrue to the entrant’s Intermediate score.
  3. Advanced entrants may submit two images, one of which may be for the optional Prescribed topic. Points gained for the Prescribed topic will accrue to the entrant’s Advanced score.
In order to encourage members to take up the Prescribed challenge, a separate tally of Prescribed scores will be kept, with awards for the Print and PDI winners at the end of the season.
We will publish the list of Prescribed topics soon, to give you as much time as possible to get your thinking caps on and your lens caps off.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Well done to Mike Martin for a couple of recent successes. The first was a 5th place in Round 3 of the Amateur Photographer of the Year Competition

Secondly, Mike also picked up a 1st place in one of Photocrowd's themed competitions with the theme "The Colour Black". The competition has two layers of voting, one by the professionals and the other by popular vote. In the former, Mike was placed 1st, however the poular vote put him 95th - but, heh, what do they know, they picked "aahh" pictures of monkeys and Black Labradors. Mike's winning shot is shown below:

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Make Money For BPS Every Time You Shop On Amazon!
Now we're all still in lockdown, the thought of on-line shopping must be looming large in many members' minds. It's worth remembering that if you so wish, each and every one of you can support BPS with every purchase you make on Amazon by using Amazon Smile. Click on the link below – then it’s self-explanatory.
Shopping using Smile is no different to your normal Amazon shopping and costs you nothing, it's just that you need to tell it that you wish to use Smile and then we get some pennies!

For Sale
If you have any photographic items for sale, drop me a line and I'll include it in the next newsletter. Please make sure that you provide contact details, price and full description of the sale items (pictures always help).

Photographic Acronyms
