Next Wednesday we have a visit from Mike Reeves, who will be presenting his talk: Holga, Bronica & Pinhole - Fine Art Photography. This is an extract from Mike's web page:
Michael works predominantly with film and medium format cameras for his fine art work, photographing details from both the natural landscape and the urban environment. He particularly favours Holgas, employing their lo-fi optical characteristics to lend a nostalgic or dreamlike feel to his images. He also experiments with pinhole cameras as well as giving vintage cameras from thrift shops a second chance. He often searches out locations that resonate with feelings of memory and the passage of time - such as a memorial in a cemetery, the transitory shadow of a tree, the impression a moving object leaves on a scene during a long exposure, or an object left behind with its story preserved in the photograph and continuing in the memory of the viewer. He is also drawn to places and pursuits we often associate with childhood, such as the seaside, funfairs or exploring the woods. A recurring theme in his Holga work is the 'found' still life, most notably his series 'Fragments' in which he brings out the beauty and mystery of neglected or abandoned objects and overlooked scenes, fragments of the world around us that we often do not notice.
For more information about Mike and to view some of his images, please visit his website. |
Last Wednesday we hosted Reflex Camera Club for a return match following our visit to them last year. The competition was judged by Sandy Cox ARPS. BPS won quite convincingly and the results are shown below:

Bristol Salon of Photography 2015
|
This is your last chance to enter the Bristol Salon for nothing! 17 January is the closing date for free entry for BPS members, any entries received after that date will be charged the full fee, there can be no exception to this as it wouldn't be fair on those members who got their entries in on time.
This is your chance to enter one of the leading international exhibitions for FREE, just go to the Salon entry page on the BPS website where you will be able to find the Conditions of Entry and the on-line entry system. If you haven't entered internationals before, this is your chance to dip your toe in the murky waters of the exhibition world, and it won't cost you a penny!
When you get to the page where you enter your own details, make sure that you select YES when asked if you are a BPS member and enter your BPS membership number (see head of this newsletter) where prompted for Membership Reference. This will mean that when you get to the payment page at the end you can just click ALREADY PAID. Ignore any references to fees due in the confirmation email you will receive.

There are approximately three weeks left before the entry date for this year’s WCPF AV Competition. In order to offer more flexibility in entry content, for those not wishing to enter the 3:21 category, the following is now added to the 2015 Rules. “As an alternative to the current entry limit of one short plus one long AV per entrant, both entries may be in the long category, provided that their combined length does not exceed 12 minutes.” This will, for example, allow entrants to enter two Photo Harmony sequences up to the maximum length of six minutes each. The awards will still be given for Short, (less that 3:22), Long, (between 3.22 and 12 minutes), and Photo Harmony (6 minutes max), categories. Version 4 of the Rules and Entry Form documents are attached, reflecting this change. In order to make things easier for those who prefer full on line entry, we now have an email address that may be used to send PayPal entry fees to WCPF. The details are included in the v4 Entry Form. All AV files and entry forms should still be sent to wcpfavinfo@btinternet.com. Entries, with cheque, may also be handed in at DPIC on Sunday 8th February. Visitors are invited to join the audience on Saturday 11th April at Clyst St Mary (Village Hall) near Exeter EX5 1BG, to enjoy a variety of Audio Visual presentations. Advanced seats are available at £5 per head, for an Entry and Audience Form please click here and for the rules click here. The Judges will be Joan Ryder Rathband FRPS FPSSA AFIAP DPAGB and Clive Rathband FRPS FPSSA EFIAP DPAGB. |

The British Wildlife Photography Awards 2014 - A Celebration of British Wildlife Stretching across the British Isles, from towns and cities to woodlands and shorelines, The British Wildlife Photography Awards captures the majestic beauty of our own ‘back garden’; featuring Otters, Puffins, Grey Herons, Starlings, Blue Sharks, Grey Seals, Greylag Geese and the domestic Doormouse. Captured amongst their natural habitat, it also turns the spotlight on Britain’s flora and fauna, including wild woodlands, underwater worlds and urban haunts. The awards showcases over 100 images and videos celebrating the work of amateur and professional photographers as they showcase the beauty and diversity of British wildlife, presenting the familiar in a new and often surprising light. Winning images are chosen from 16 categories including Animal Portraits, Hidden Britain and Wildpix Young People’s Award.

Members of camera clubs affiliated to the WCPF can now submit entries for this year’s WCPF Members' Exhibition. Entry is online via the WCPF website. The Exhibition entry system is open until 7th March 2015. There are the same 3 print classes and 4 PDI classes as last year. The exhibition has PAGB Patronage and PAGB Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals plus Selectors Ribbons will be awarded in each class. Full details of the class requirements can be found on the entry system website. The Exhibition is one the highlights of the WCPF Year, where 100 + of the best print images, and a showing of all other accepted images from WCPF club photographers are on display to the public for two weeks in May. The exhibition is once again returning to Buckfast Abbey where the 2013 and 2014 Exhibitions were so successfully shown and positively commented on by many visitors. Please support the Federation by entering and helping to ensure the exhibition is a success and that it maintains the high standards seen in previous years.
