Next week we get the chance to see the audio-visual presentation of the 2025 Bristol International Salon of Photography.
This comprises all of the digital images and prints that gained awards, together with a representative selection of all the accepted prints and digital images that didn't quite make the podium. This is all set to a suitable musical background track.
This show is created and put together by Andrew Marker, aided and abetted by Rachel Domleo.

Last Wednesday's speaker, Lisa Rendall, shocked a lot of those watching by telling us how much she sold some of her pictures for, in particular a picture of a Kingfisher and one that was a homage to Banksy. She did show them on screen, but they were only small and viewers probably couldn't really see them properly. I asked Lisa to send me copies and they are reproduced below:

Competition Closing Dates |
Wednesday, 11 June, is the closing date for the President’s Cup and Garmston Bowl panel competitions. If you are entering prints for the Garmston Bowl, don’t forget to upload PDIs of your prints using this link:
The competition rules are shown here:
PRESIDENT’S CUP PROJECTED DIGITAL IMAGE COMPETITION
This competition will be judged as a panel of 3 related PDIs on any subject. The images will be displayed at the competition individually, and as a triptych.
The competition is open to all members, excluding holders of ARPS, EFIAP, DPAGB, EPSA and higher distinctions. The winner of the cup will not be eligible to enter the next year’s competition.
For the President’s Cup, a typical entry upload might be: 01_Volley_50X.jpg, 02_Serve_50X.jpg, 03_Backhand_50X.jpg. The software will automatically create the triptych panel.
THE GARMSTON BOWL PRINT COMPETITION
This is open to all members and is for a panel of five related prints on any subject. The entry will be judged as a panel of five.
Wednesday, 26 June is the closing date for the Creative Competition. Barry Mead will be judging, and it will be good to have a big, healthy entry: composites, ICMs, multiple exposures, sinister penguins (other creatures are eligible) … all welcome.
The competition rules are shown here:
For this competition, a submitted image must have originated as a photographic image or images, produced either in camera or by post processing. All images must be original and may not incorporate elements produced by anyone else. Artwork or computer graphics created by the entrant may be incorporated so long as the original photographic content predominates. Digital skills should be seen as the tools to compose photographic images into one new single image. The final composition will show the photographer’s artistic interpretation.
- This is an Open
competition, with no levels of entry.
- Images may have been
entered into any previous club competition, except for previous Creative
competitions and may be entered into any subsequent bi-monthly or annual
competition, except for subsequent Creative competitions.
- Each entrant may submit
up to four images. These may be all PDI, all Print or any combination of
the two.
- The judge will select a
Best PDI, a Best Print and award the Bob Faris trophy to one of these two.
- The trophy winner will
not be eligible to enter the next year’s Creative competition.
If you have any questions or problems, please contact the relevant Competition Secretary.

The next Digital Imaging Group Meeting will be on Monday 9 June at 7.30pm.
Meetings are informal and take place at the clubhouse and via zoom.
These meetings are a great opportunity for all members to share images outside the competition environment. The aim of these evenings is to share knowledge, projects, expertise, ideas and to obtain feedback and inspiration. So, think about what techniques or tips you can share for the benefit of others, or what you might want help/ eedback on.
DIG is the perfect environment for newer and less experienced members to pick up hints and tips or receive specific feedback to improve their photography and editing skills. BPS has many experienced members with diverse interests and styles who would be happy to help. If you are unsure whom to approach, just ask and someone will help or point you in the right direction.
At the last practical evening we enjoyed a fun evening attempting to put the principles of still life composition to the test using a light painting technique with torches. See below some of the results.
If you would like to share your images at the June meeting, please send them to me at dig@bristolphoto.org.uk by 5.00pm on Friday 6 June. Please number your images in the order you would like them to be viewed and resize to the usual competition size, not essential but helps to keep the files to a manageable size. If you would please restrict the number of images to a maximum of 30 this will ensure that we enjoy a wide variety of subjects
If you have a more detailed topic/technique to share, then let me know and we can schedule a longer more focused session, or feature this on one of the intervening practical evenings.
I look forward to seeing you.

Charlie Waite

Steven Le Prevost

|
The Bob Faris Memorial Event was held last Sunday and proved to be a resounding success, with almost 150 photographers from across the Southwest, South Wales and much farther afield gathering to watch/listen to two great photographers, namely Charlie Waite and Steven Le Prevost.
Both of these photographers are total control freaks in their own way, Charlie making sure that every element of his landscapes is absolutely correct before he presses the shutter and Steven giving the impression that his images are dreamscapes, but behind every image he is in total control of every element of the picture which will have come from a multitude of sources.
The day ended with a raffle draw which had some pretty amazing prizes, with our own Rachel Domleo winning a new camera - maybe we'll finally get to see some decent pictures from her!
Below, you can see Ralph introducing Steven Le Prevost at the beginning of the day:

I received the following from John Hudson this week:
I am pleased to report that one of my photographs was used on the BBC website last weekend.
Almondsbury Community Shop has been presented with the King's Award for Voluntary Service, the highest award given to local volunteer groups in the UK and equivalent to an MBE.
As a volunteer in the shop myself, since it opened in 2009, I was asked to take some photographs of the ceremony.
The ceremony was held on 24 May, when Edward Gillespie OBE, Lord-Lieutenant of Gloucestershire, formally presented the award on behalf of the King.
What was interesting for me, was that as there were 100 people in the garden and many of them were present or past volunteers it was important to have a shot where they were all as visible as possible. A normal camera shot would have got the first row and perhaps the second… but by using a drone at just 3 to 4 metres off the ground, we can see all the faces of people present.
Here is the image that I submitted to the BBC:
Another great use of a drone!!
John Hudson
I had already noticed this page on the BBC website (and had planned to use it in this issue), when John's email landed in my inbox. Unfortunately, by the time the BBC had published it, they had been busy with their cropping scissors, so quite a few people were left out! Ed.

Rob & Maureen Gillet have a lightbox going FREE to a good home.
The box is 66cm x 58cm x 17cm and would be suitable for anyone who still uses slides or negatives. It would also be very useful for someone interested in tracing images for artwork or for still life photography.
If you would like to become the proud owner of this lightbox, please telephone Rob or Maureen to arrange collection (BACKWELL): 01275 464333

Further to the item in Issue 633 about Sue O'Connell reaching the finals of the World Food Photography Award. I have received this update from Sue:
Just reporting back on the World Food Photography Awards evening last week. It was a great occasion with some fabulous work (from an entry of 10,000+) and I was over the moon to come Second in the “Food for the Family” category. As icing on the cake I've since learned that my image is one of only 12 selected for display at the Museum of the Home in London until September.

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
