Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace

For more than twelve years, acclaimed author Maxine Hong Kingston, author of China Men, has led writing workshops for veterans and their families. In Veterans of War, Veterans of Peace, Kingston brings together the fiction, real-life narrative, and poetry of these men and women. Joining Kingston at BookShop West Portal will be five contributors, including a retired Army officer, a peace activist, and an advocate for civilian women who served during the Vietnam conflict. Kingston's award-winning memoir, Woman Warrior, is being honored this year on the 30th anniversary of its publication by the National Book Foundation and the Asian American Writers' Workshop.

Recognizing Grace: Everyday Stories of Blessing and Holiness
Friday, December 8 at 7 PM
Noted author and physician Rachel Naomi Remen will read and discuss stories from her best-selling books, Kitchen Table Wisdom and My Grandfather's Blessings, with musical accompaniment by Christie McCarthy. A master story-teller, Dr. Remen draws from her wide experience as a physician/healer, professor of medicine, and therapist to those with life-threatening illnesses. In addition to being a pioneer in training physicians in relationship-centered care, she is co-founder and medical director of the Commonwealth Cancer Help Program in Bolinas, California.
