From the Church Guy
My favorvite holiday comes in November...THANKSGIVING!
Remember what Erma Bombeck wrote?  "What we're really talking about is a wonderful day set aside on the fourth Thursday of November when no one diets.  I mean, why else would they call it Thanksgiving?"
She also wrote, "Thanksgiving dinners take eighteen hours to prepare.  They are consumed in twelve minutes.  Half-times take twelve minutes.  This is not coincidence."
Okay, she was kidding.  (I hope.)
It's my favorite holiday because it's all about counting our blessings and offering our gratitude, and maybe getting together with people we love for a nice meal.  Simple yet meaningful.
So, Happy Thanksgiving!  If you're cooking for someone, be thankful, and chill out as much as you can.  If someone is cooking for you, be thankful.  And HELP OUT!
(And don't forget the needy this time of the year: we're still working for CHOW and the Canteen!)

 Spring ahead, Fall back!
Don't forget to set your clocks back an hour this Saturday, November 2.  You don't want to miss that extra hour as the time changes.  (Of course, if you get to church an hour early, you're always welcome!)
Church School News
As reported last month, we are trying something new for our young teens.  On the 4th Sunday of each month teens in grades 7-9 are invited to gather in the undercroft to work on an outreach project.  The adult leader for the group is Theresa Brom; and she had six teens last month.  They made brownies and gave them to the Trinity Feeding Canteen.  I'd say they're off to a good start!
Upcoming events: November 22 - 4th-6th grade sleepover.  Children may bring a friend to the sleepover.  There is a sign-up sheet on the bulletin board.  They will need to bring a sleeping bag & pillow, pj's, toiletries, and a snack to share.  I will also need two parents to help chaperone.  The sleepover begins at 7 p.m. Friday and ends at 9 a.m. Saturday.
On November 24 the children will be making bagged lunches for the Canteen.  They will need to be at the church by 9:15 with their food items and to help with the lunches.  A sign up sheet is posted on the bulletin board.
And in December we will offer a Christmas Party!  It will be on Saturday, December 7 from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.  There will be games, crafts, a movie and food!  A sign-up sheet will be posted soon.

St. Mark's is counting on you!
Pledge Sunday is November 3.  We ask the people of St. Mark's to fill out a financial promise for the coming year so that the Vestry can plan our budget and be faithful stewards of our parish and the gifts we have been given.  Are you grateful for God's gifts?  Do you think St. Mark's is a strong church?  If you say yes to either question, please pledge generously!
Here's What We Are Reading in Book Club
The Book Club selection for November is The Supremes at Earl's All You Can Eat written by Edward Kelsey Moore.  A story jam-packed with warmth, honesty, wit, travail and just enough madcap humor, this novel teems with memorable characters centering on a decades-old friendship among three colorful women.  Irresistible!!

 We remember those we love...
The first Sunday in November is the Sunday after All Saints, and it is our custom to remember our beloved dead in the liturgies that day.
"Remember thy servants, O Lord, according to the favor which thou bearest unto thy people; and grant that, increasing in knowledge and love of thee, they may go from strength to strength in the life of perfect service in thy heavenly kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Lord."
     We will remember...
Join us again at the Children of Abraham gathering
There will be another meaningful interfaith program on Sunday, November 10.  "Beyond Tolerence: Searching for Interfaith Understanding" will be presented by Professor Gustav Niebuhr of Syracuse University.  The event will be held at the United Presbyterian Church of Binghamton, 42 Chenango Street, downtown.  Registration begins at 1:30 p.m. with a $3 donation requested.  The program will begin at 2:00.  Our own rector has been asked to lead the entire assembly in the interfaith song he wrote.  These events are always enriching -- come and see!
Highway Cleanup Rescheduled
On Saturday, November 16, meet us at the mini-golf course on Route 12A at 9:00 a.m.  Duane Mayo will give us the safety instuctions, and then we will clean up the section of road St. Mark's has adopted - Route 12A from the bridge to Route 12.  It takes less than two hours and is a gift to our community!
The Annual Convention of our Diocese
Led by our Bishop, the delegates of the parishes of the Diocese of Central New York will meet in Liverpool on Friday and Saturday, November 15-16.  This annual Convention transacts the necessary business of the diocese and wider Church.  All clergy attend, and the lay delegates from St. Mark's are Brian Kessler and Andy Pierce.
"Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good!"
On Thanksgiving Day, November 28, the Rector will offer Eucharist at 9:00 a.m.  What better day to gather together and thank the Lord?
