Have you
ever looked at a group of friends and wondered, “What do they see in one
another?” What is it that makes them want to go to a ballgame together
or help one another with a weekend project or
just hang out? Often it’s shared interests and common goals. It might
be that they’re neighbors. They may appreciate certain qualities in one
another. If there were none of these things, would they be friends?
Probably not.
So what does
God see in us that moved Him to bring us into fellowship with Him and
call us His children? Why would He want us to spend eternity with Him in
the glory of heaven? By nature we have nothing
in common with Him. We’re dead in sin; He is holy. We’re mortal; He is
eternal. He is the Potter; we are only the clay.
So what does
God see in us? He sees Jesus, for Jesus came to be our Brother. He came
to be holy in your place. When God looks at your life, He sees Jesus’
perfect words and actions. When God pronounces
judgment upon sin, He again sees Jesus, for Jesus suffered for your
sins and those of all mankind on the cross. “For just as through the
disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through
the obedience of the one man the many will be made
righteous” (Romans 5:19).
We don’t
have to earn our place in God’s family by what we do. Jesus has already
done everything for us. We don’t have prove that we’re worthy of God’s
love and attention. He loved us before He created
the world. “I have loved you with an everlasting love; I have drawn you
with lovingkindness” (Jeremiah 31:3).
What does God see in us? He sees Jesus. May others see Jesus in us as well.
