Wednesday 29 October

Our speaker next week is none other than our own Peter Brisley ARPS DPAGB BPE 2* EFIAP, who will be presenting his talk entitled Freewheeling. In typical "Peter speak" he says the following about the evening:

SPECIAL- FOR ONE NIGHT ONLY

Criss-crossing five continents, the man with the golden footprint, armed only with his trusty Canon in his hand, brings you tales of endurance, derring-do and survival.

A breathtaking display of prints and projected images in both monochrome and colour. Some oldies, some goldies and some hot off the printer!

Be There or be Square!!!!

Below are a few images from the talk, but if you want to see more but can't wait until next week, have a look at his website - www.peterbrisley.photography

Steven le Prevost Prints
Those of you who attended this week's meeting, will have heard Ralph mention that we have a small selection (seven) of Steven le Prevost prints for sale. Steven was one of the two guest speakers at this year's Bob Faris Memorial Lecture, and he generously donated these prints for BPS to sell for club funds. They are available on his website at £25 each (unmounted) but the seven we have for sale are mounted and going for the bargain price of £15 each - first come, first served!

Have a look at some of Steven's work by visiting his website - www.stevenleprevost.com

Ladies vs Gents

JUST 2 GENTS & 1 LADY HAVE SUBMITTED IMAGES SO FAR
DON'T FORGET, WITHOUT IMAGES WE HAVE NO CONTEST.

The Ladies vs Gents Battle is being held on 12 November as mentioned in the previous two issues of this newsletter. Sadly, response has been poor (to put it mildly) with very few entries so far. It won't be much of an evening if the judge only has five images to talk about, so extricate those digits and submit your images - let's make a good evening of it!

This is not a "handbags at dawn" type battle, but a friendly, light-hearted Open projected image competition with the two sides battling it out on the night. (The subject is Open and is changed from what was previously announced, to make it less restrictive.)

The judge is John Chamberlin, who will mark each entry out of 10, live on the night, and the victorious side will be crowned at the end of the evening.

Entry closes Friday, 7 Nov at mid-night.

Each entrant can enter 2 images, please name the images as follows:
01 (or 02)_image title_membership number.jpeg
Example: 01_My Dog_296.jpeg
Your BPS membership number can be found at top of this newsletter.

Image size 1600 x 1200 pixels. Colour space sRGB

Upload your images to the relevant link below:
The total entry will be assessed by the ladies and gents captains so that we end up with an equal entry of say 20 images per team.

The Ladies captain will be Carole Brown and the Gents Barry Mead

PAGB Interclub Print Competition

Saturday saw Ralph and Mike travel north to Blackburn for this prestigious competition.

You will recall we qualified for this national competition by being one of the top two clubs in the WCPF Inter Club Print Competition.

Each of the 39 clubs competing entered 12 images in Round 1 – the aim being to finish in the top 8 clubs and earn a place in the final, with the remaining clubs competing in the Plate competition.

The rules are quite complex with a required minimum number of mono and colour images, a maximum number of nature images or images by each author and obviously none may have been used previously. For the final / plate competitions the number of images required changes, as do the restrictions on the mix of images, although you do have an opportunity to select new images hopefully aligned to the genres the judges favoured in Round 1! Selection is a tactical battle to try and boost your scores by picking wisely; hence the need for a much larger pool of prints to select from!

So, a huge thank-you for everyone who provided prints, or files for printing – whilst your images may not have been selected on the day, they are an invaluable help on the day.  So how did we do?

Round 1
We scored 159 (12 images) in a very high scoring round, 3 points and 2 places behind the cut-off for the final.

Plate Competition
Scores eased off a bit, but we still scored 106 (8 images) ending equal 4th with Dorchester and two other clubs, only 2 points behind the winners, Ipswich PS.

The Final
We sat this out watching the top clubs battle it out, with the final outcome being a three-way tie between Chorley, Arden and Smethwick.

It was a real feast for the eyes, but sadly we’ve got to go through the qualifying WCPF competition to earn our place for next year.

Here are the images we used:

For the plate we had to include at least four new images, shown below:

Treble session special!
Michelle will be returning, joined by Anna, a fantastic make-up artist, for the whole day.  Some of you may recognise Michelle from the fake underwater shoot in August and Anna from large number of Mike’s photos including when she had paint poured over her! Anna now focuses on make-up for film and TV so Mike is excited to see what she can add to the party. This is your opportunity to see how working on a planned styled shoot with a collaborative team can elevate your photography, at a fraction of the cost of other workshops.
