April 2016
From the Church Guy
Welcome to the Great Fifty Days!  Now we celebrate the resurrection of Christ!
When the sun comes up over the hills, remember this: Christ is risen!
When the moon shines in your window, remember this: Christ is risen!
When the clouds make a gray quilt in the sky, remember this: Christ is risen!
When the days get longer at last, remember this: Christ is risen!
When the birds sing their madrigals once more, remember this: Christ is risen!
When the trees put their best clothes on again, remember this: Christ is risen!
When you feel joy for no apparent reason, remember this: Christ is risen!
When you wake and when you sleep,
when you work and when you play,
when you live and when you die,
remember this: Christ is risen!

Come to the Table
The April St. Mark's Table is set...set for Tuesday, April 19, at 6:00 p.m.  We always welcome everyone to this combination of potluck meal, fellowship event, and spiritual practice.
We begin with a meal at 6, and ask you to bring a dish to share, as well as your own place setting.  After we eat and talk together, Fahter Mark leads some singing with his guitar.  We finish our time together with a simple celebration of the Eucharist around the table.
It gives a lift mid-week, and if you've not ever attended, or not for along while, we hope you'll come.
 Hunger is Still Here
And St. Mark's want to help.  On Sunday, April 24, we have our monthly turn to staff the Trinity Feeding Canteen.  We provide a team of six or more people, and the food to feed about a hundred needy people.  A hot dinner is offered to all comers, and we pass out sack lunches, too.
Both adults and kids from St. Mark's have consistently worked on this important ministry.  Can you sign up for our April session?  It's a couple of hours of work (from about 11 a.m. until 1 p.m.) and it makes a huge difference for hungry people in need.
 What's New in Sunday School
Beginning in February, I tried to come up with a fun way to increase our children's knowledge of the Bible, the Church seasons, and the Liturgy by way of trivia questions.  Each week they are given a few questions to be filled out and brought back in the following Sunday (or next time in church), in return they received a small treat. For most of February and March the questions focused on the Lenten season.  I hope they had fun learning some things that they didn't know about Lent - and maybe the parents did also!?! This isn't a test, so if they don't fill them out, please don't let it keep them from coming to church.
We are working on organizing a Youth Sunday service for May 1.  This is when the children take an active part in the worship service by reading the lessons, sermon, kid stuff, and ushering.  It is also Rogation Sunday, a time when we pray for a fruitful harvest.  In accordance with that theme the Junior Youth Group are working on organizing a church grounds workday.  Watch for posters and sign-up sheets that will be on the bulletin boards.

What's new for the Book Club
For April, the group will discuss Judy Blume's "In The Unlikely Event," a fictional novel based on a terrifying real-life event: three airline crashes in Blume's home town of Elizabeth, New Jersey, during the winter of 1951-1952.  The story fast-forwards 35 years at both beginning and end to show how individuals and families living in the town were affected, and how they eventually managed to make sense of what they could.  Many characters are based on real people who died either in the planes or on the ground, as well as those who mourned their loss.
To the Women of St. Mark's
The Women's Retreat at Sky Lake Retreat Center will be held April 30 - May 1.  The topic will be "greening", and the illuminations of Hildegard of Bingen will be our inspiration.  They deal with the greening of self, others, environment, and institutions.  Hildergard was a woman very ahead of her time and she has much to say to us today.  Because there will be a group in Underwood Friday night, the cleaning crew will need time to prepare for us, so our start time on Saturday has been moved to 10:30 a.m.  Departure time on Sunday will be early afternoon.
Please call Mary Taylor to reserve your spot.  Reservations and money must be in the church office no later than Sunday, April 17th.  Please make your check out to me - Judy Kessler.  If they are made out to the church, they take far longer to process.  The fee is the same as last year - $80 for an overnight stay and $30 per day, if you prefer not to stay overnight.  Scholarships are available through Father Mark if it is needed. The fee covers meals, snacks & linens (sheets and towels), vibrant conversation & wonderful cameraderie.  All are welcome to attend this event and we would welcome your presence and participation.
