Hello Firstname

Wednesday 13 June
Next week we have a change from the published programme; as previously mentioned Kathryn Scorah is unable to come, instead at great expense we have a double bill: our own Barry Mead EFIAP/d2 FRPS MPAGB APAGB and Keith Wood EFIAP/p DPAGB will be sharing the stage to entertain us.
Keith will be projecting a nearly random selection of images from the last 20 years, some of which may have been previously seen (but not by the newer members), some of which have been used in international salons, and some which have never been seen.  He will comment briefly on the how and why of some images and explain the origins of the few highly manipulated images that he will show. Below are a couple of examples of Keith's images:

Barry will be doing the second half of the evening with projected work all of which has been extensively used in his FIAP award gathering. Some is from his Platinum year and some of it has been seen before but quite a bit not seen at the club previously, some will be straight, but a lot won't be. The images will be mostly full on creative and which have gained 262 awards in 2016 and 2017. It will include even the recent stuff like the two here.

Digital Imaging Group
Next Monday, 11th June, is the monthly meeting of the Digital Imaging Group to which all members are invited. These meetings are informal and you are welcome to bring any images or presentations you may want to show others what you have been doing or for discussion and advice on your images. As usual please bring your images as prints or jpegs (on a USB memory stick in a folder of your name please) or any problem images you may want help on from other members.
As part of reintroducing short technical themes in these meetings, I am hoping to have a demonstration of how basic improvements to your images can quickly be made using Lightroom CC. Some of the basic techniques still apply to Photoshop as well. Looking forward to seeing you next Monday.

AGM
Members are reminded that this year’s AGM takes place on 4 July. All motions for the AGM must be received by the Secretary by 11 June at the latest (please see page 13 of your BPS Handbook 2017-2018, which states that the date is 31 May, this has been extended). All motions must be in writing, signed by the proposer and seconder and posted to: The Secretary, Bristol Photographic Society, Unit 13, Montpelier Central, Station Road, Montpelier, Bristol, BS6 5EE no later than 11 June.
Full notice of the AGM will be sent out in a separate newsletter.

BPS Competition Awards
Council have decided to change several of the trophies awarded to competition winners. Many of these are presently cups which have now become substantially worn and partially damaged, and often present engraving difficulties and delays. In future, presentation cups will be retained for the President's Cup, the Garmston Bowl and the Studio Group Competition.  All the other trophies will be in the form of a certificate and a personally engraved medal (which will become the property of the winner). It is expected that this change will be implemented in time for the forthcoming AGM.

Car Park - Strange Man Seen Lurking
This may be an overreaction, but it is probably worth mentioning that when one of our members left at half time last week, she noticed a stranger lurking in the car park looking somewhat furtive. I would suggest that members make sure that there are no items left on show in their cars and that all valuables are secured in the boot - better safe than sorry.

Studio Group Competition
The studio competition will be for images taken during any of the studio group meetings that have taken place in the 12 months ending 31 May 2018. Any member who has attended these sessions can submit up to four images which they should rank in order of their preference for being entered in the competition. The images should be sent in an email with 'Studio Competition' in the subject line to: competitions@bristolphoto.org.uk by midnight on 24 June and should follow the normal rules for projected image competitions i.e.:
1.  If you do not receive a Submission Report, this may mean your images have not been received.
2. Submissions can only be made by email and are not accepted on the night and cannot be made by CD, flash drive or memory stick.
3. Please be aware that the images are handled automatically once loaded into the competition software and the software will reject incorrect images (too large or wrong naming pattern).
4.  Images must not be greater than 1400 pixels wide and 1050 pixels high - Note that Portrait format images must not be more than 1050 pixels high.
5.  Save the images as a JPG using the highest quality. (Other file types such as TIFF or PSD will not be accepted).
6.  The projector uses the sRGB colour space and hence you should save the images using the sRGB colour profile. Other profiles (such as Adobe98 or ProPhoto) may result in incorrect display of the image.
7. Name each file you enter in the following pattern. For example: 01_Alexandrea_296S.jpg
•    01, 02, 03, etc. to show order of preference
•    underscore (not a hyphen)
•  Title of the image (which can contain spaces and hyphens but must not contain underscore)
•      underscore (not a hyphen)
•    Your Membership Number (shown on this newsletter) followed without a space by the letter S.
The images will be shown randomly in pairs following the AGM on the 4 July and all present will vote on them on a knockout basis until we have an overall winner who will be presented with the studio trophy.
If you’ve enjoyed a studio group meeting please support this new competition, it is a great chance both for the experienced members and for those new to competitions to try their hand.

Programme Change
Would members please note that there is a change to the advertised programme. On June 13 we were due to welcome Kathryn Scorah. Unfortunately, she is unable to make it, so we have an alternative evening provided by Keith Wood and Barry Mead. More details closer the date.

Cups
As the AGM draws ever closer, so does the time for all cup holders to return their cups, so please let Keith Wood have them at any Wednesday meeting between now and the end of June.

PAGB Interclub DPI Competition - Warwick
BPS will be representing the WCPF at the annual PAGB Interclub Competition to be held at Warwick on Saturday 14 July at Warwick University. This event brings together the top two Clubs from each of the 15 Federations, together with the top 8 placed clubs from the 2017 Championships to compete to find the Champion Club for 2018.
Admission is from 9.30am by prepaid ticket only; these can be purchased by completing the form (download here) and sending it with the correct remittance and an SAE, to the address shown on the form. This is a great day out when you get to see some of the best images in Great Britain and at the same time get to meet members from other clubs from across the country.

Image Titles - Mono vs Colour
For those of you who enter international exhibitions, if the exhibition has PSA Recognition, the rules regarding the titling of images have changed. Please read the following if you enter the same images in both colour and monochrome images, this applies even if the images are entered in different exhibitions:

A motion was passed dealing with the titling of monochrome and colour images from the same original capture. That motion was specific to exhibitors. Since then, the Board has passed a new motion applicable to all PSA members, competitions and activities.
NEW: Images meeting the Monochrome Definition and non-manipulated colour images from the same original capture shall be considered the same image and must be given the same title. This rule shall apply to all images used in any PSA competition or activity.
PSA members working on Galaxy and Diamond Star Ratings shall be allowed to continue using different titles of monochrome versions and colour versions of the same image in exhibitions without FIAP patronage if both versions have been accepted prior to August 1, 2018 until the required number of titles for those images has been completed.

Studio Hire
Following this month's Council meeting, it has been decided to increase the hire fee for the studio from £30 to £35. This increase takes immediate effect, however existing bookings will be honoured at the old rate.

Beyond The Wall - Dates For Your diary
Here is some advanced notice of a couple of future events being organised by David Grierson at Beyond the Wall.

Monday 18 June: How to enter external Salons and Competitions hosted by Jeff Hargreaves

Monday July 23rd: Producing B and W images in Lightroom.

The following is from BTW leader, David Grierson:

YouTube: Many members have mentioned certain names who have great learning sites on YouTube. What I’d like to create is a database of these names so we can all benefit.
A couple I use are:
  • Anthony Morganti - click here
  • Photos in colour - click here
Please email your “go to” sites to mail@dgrierson.co.uk and I’ll publish the results.

Following on from the recent talk on mount cutters by Longridge, they have now written to say that members can get a discount on the cutters, however to get this discount, orders will have to be placed over the phone, quoting Bristol Photographic Society and Chris Longridge.

Fotospeed Academy
The Fotospeed Academy is holding a workshop at the BPS clubrooms on 16 & 17 June to help those who are looking to go for distinctions with the likes of RPS, FIAP, PAGB, BPA and more. The course is being run by ‘The Welsh Dragon’, AKA Margaret Salisbury. Margaret will display examples of successful and also unsuccessful panels, to highlight their strengths and weaknesses. She will offer guidance to participants looking for Distinctions or running Open/International Exhibitions and use her own experience to encourage and assist you.
She will also explain the up to date criteria for the different associations and John Herlinger from The Fine Art Print room will also be on hand to share his knowledge on the best ways to present your work for panels. Finally, you will be asked to bring your own work which will be displayed and reviewed by other members in the class. BPS already runs its own print mentoring evenings, but this could well be a useful addition to those evenings. The dates are 16 & 17 June (two courses). Full details can be found by following this link.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
Well done to Richard Kay on becoming an ARPS (Associate of the Royal Photographic Society).

Congratulations to John Hudson for gaining a Gold medal, a Bronze medal and an Honourable Mention in the Spring Clicks 2018 - Exhibition Circuit.

Salon acceptances: BPS photographers are now achieving large numbers of salon acceptances and constraints on time and space mean we can't include them all. So please only advise of awards or other milestones.

Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.

Studio Bookings
Would all members please note: before you plan your shoot and book your model, you should check whether the studio/clubroom will be free. This can be done easily and at any time by viewing the Clubroom Bookings calendar in the Members' Area of the BPS Website. Bookings can (and must) be made by contacting Mike Bigger at bookings@bristolphoto.org.uk.
Log in details to the Members' Area are at the end of this newsletter.

Items For Sale
Please note, we can only carry adverts for items to sell if those items actually belong to the member advertising them.

If you have something photographic that you want to sell, let me have the details and I will circulate them to a captive audience of photographers through the Newsletter - send to the usual address.

Photographic Acronyms
For those of you who aren't sure what MPAGB, EFIAP/s and many more such seemingly random collections of letters mean, just click here to download the list.

Personal Detail Changes
Please don't forget that if you change your address (home or email), or gain additional photographic distinctions, it would be appreciated if you could let the Membership Secretary know so that she can keep her records up to date, this will also ensure that you continue to receive your newsletters - please email all changes to membership@bristolphoto.org.uk
The distinctions we have on record are those shown at the top of this newsletter, if they are wrong, please let Carol know.
