"Chas" Newby's Place In Beatle History

In December 1960, Charles ‘Chas’ Newby was temporarily the bassist for The Beatles. The members of The Beatles had returned from their first trip to Germany in early December, except for bassist Stuart Sutcliffe who stayed behind in Hamburg with a cold. Sutcliffe didn’t return back to Liverpool until January 20, 1961, with airfare money borrowed from his girlfriend Astrid Kirchherr. In the meantime Newby, a friend and former band mate of Pete Best (in The Blackjacks and skiffle group The Barmen), filled in on bass for three gigs with the Beatles.

In the book Liddypool: Birthplace of The Beatles, Newby said this about his start in music – “I started playing acoustic guitar and then progressed to the bass guitar. I never wanted to be a professional musician – I had always longed to be a scientist.” In fact, during his brief stint with the Beatles, Chas was on vacation from a university he was attending. John Lennon asked him to go with the Beatles to Germany when they were to make their second trip there, but he chose to return to the university instead. Newby would later become a Mathematics teacher at Droitwich Spa High School in Worcestershire, England.

When Stuart Sutcliffe left the band in August 1961, Paul McCartney switched from guitar to bass to permanently fill that vacancy. It’s interesting to note that like Paul, Chas is also a left-handed bass player. And not only that, they share the same birthday (June 18) with Chas being one year, to the day, older than Paul.

American English To Honor Veterans With Private Concert

Every year the second Saturday in May is the start of Armed Forces Week ending with the national observance of Armed Forces Day which falls on May 19, 2012 this year.  In coordination with friend and well-known local recording artist, Joe Cantafio,  American English will have the honor of performing a one hour concert on Friday, May 18th for the Extended Care residents of Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital located in Hines, IL as part of Armed Forces Week.

Joe Cantafio has traveled throughout U.S. bases in the Middle East performing for the brave soldiers of America and the Coalition Forces in Iraq who preserve the world’s freedom and liberate the oppressed.  Joe and decorated Vietnam combat veteran, Robert Kolling are also founders of the not-for-profit charitable organization Forgotten Heroes, whose purpose is to recognize those long term hospitalized veterans that are typically either bed-ridden, mobility challenged, or otherwise socially disadvantaged; deployed American and Coalition Armed Forces and active American Military personnel on US bases across the world.

Thanks again to Joe Cantafio and Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital for giving American English the opportunity to give back to our often forgotten heroes by entertaining them with the Fab music of The Beatles.

Festival Season Is Coming!

The month of May and Memorial Day weekend are the signals for all of us thatFitzgerald's March 2012 summer is nearing and with that comes the end of the indoor shows and the beginning of the outdoor festivals. For this reason, we urge all our fans (21 and over) to take advantage of the remaining shows at venues like Harrah's, Peggy Kinnane's, Rivers Casino, and Fitzgerald's where you can always count on the lads highlighting not only the top hits of The Beatles, but many of the B-side tunes, perhaps an entire album, or the introduction to some new material. It's always a fun time and the lads appreciate the enthusiasm and energy their fans bring to each and every show.
