Wednesday 22 November

Our speaker next week is Alastair Chalmers, who will be presenting his talk entitled Paddy and the 3 Volcanoes. Alastair says the following about the talk:

The talk describes a trip my wife and I made to Java and Lombok in 2012 in the course of which we ascended three volcanos and saw remarkable sights, but I will also show other aspects of Indonesia. There are Hindu ruins from the 9th century, wonderful tropical plants (think Spice Islands) and a huge population, but the main part of the talk will be on the volcanos. These are dramatic, huge and hard work to access.

I hope that my pictures will delight you as much as the trip delighted us, and with less effort!
Below are some images to show the sort of things we can expect to see:

Distinctions Advisory Evening
If you are thinking about going for a photographic distinction, then your first port of call has to be the next Distinctions Advisory Workshop, which will take place at Unit 13 next Monday, 20 November, starting at 19:30. The advice will be given by Pete McCloskey FRPS, Ralph Snook ARPS and Andrew Marker FRPS.

Pete, Ralph and Andrew will be able to answer any questions you may have about distinctions and give you advice on what is needed to get those magic letters after your name. This workshop will be aimed at prints only and for members thinking of an RPS distinction. Although aimed at RPS distinctions, any advice will clearly be useful if you are thinking of submitting for a PAGB Distinction.

Future workshops will vary in content, including advice on PAGB Distinctions and digital submissions.

If you are interested in this workshop, please feel free to contact any of the advisors:

Print Competition: Round 2
The closing date for Round 2 is next Wednesday, 22 November and there is a box for your entries on the stage in Unit 13.

Club level entrants may submit a maximum of 3 prints in each round of the competition. Intermediate and Advanced entrants may submit a maximum of 2. Prints awarded by the judge earn points.  Across the four rounds these points are accumulated. Trophies are presented in each of the 3 levels (Club, Intermediate, and Advanced) to the holders of the highest number of points at the end of the four rounds.

Prescribed Topic Challenge
For entrants at all levels, one of your 3 or 2 images may be submitted for an optional Prescribed topic challenge in each round. These will be judged together, regardless of the entrant’s level.  This entry must be identified by ticking the box on the print label.  Points gained for the Prescribed topic will also accrue to the entrant’s score at the appropriate level.
A separate tally of Prescribed scores will be kept, with an award for the winner at the end of the season.

You can download labels for your prints from the Members’ Portal on the website.  To find the current labels for prints, either go to Competition Closing Dates and find the download links at the foot of the list or go to Competition Rules & Info -> General Guide For Entrants and find the same links there.

It’s also important that you supply a digital copy of each print you enter.  This should be the same size as for the PDI competitions – 1600 x 1200 – but there will be no need to give any other information than your name and the title.   You don’t need to add your membership number or level of entry.  Please upload the digital copies of your prints via this link: bristolphoto.org.uk/printsuploadprintsupload

The judge for this round will be Peter Young LRPS, CPAGB, HonPAGB, AFIAP.

The optional Prescribed topic for this round is Hands. So, all hands on deck for plenty of entries.

Please contact me at printcompetitions@bristolphoto.org.uk if you have any questions or problems.

DI Group - Affinity Photo
Affinity Photo – Basic Level introduction

After the recent survey for Digital Imaging Group, I found that a significant number of members use or would like to use Affinity Photo software for editing images. It has most of the essential features of Photoshop and is a cost-effective option. Visit https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/photo/ for more information.

Rachel Domleo has volunteered to host an introduction to Affinity Photo at the basic level for those wishing to know a bit more about using the software. She has abandoned Photoshop Elements in favour of Affinity, and she has been very pleased with the results, some of which you will have seen in the club competitions.

The demo will be one off, either in the clubroom or on zoom. To get an idea of the number of members interested would you please contact me at the email address below so that Rachel can plan her demo as soon as possible.

The PAGB and AI
The following is a statement issued by the PAGB regarding the use of AI in PAGB events:

Introduction This guidance amplifies the General Conditions for PAGB Events. It applies directly to all images submitted to PAGB events. This guidance may be adopted by others including Federations and Clubs or may be modified for their own use in any way at their discretion.

Principles How an individual creates an image for their own use, and what source material is coopted for image creation, is entirely at the individual’s discretion. But, when an image is submitted alongside the images of others into a competition or exhibition, then each participant needs to be assured that the other participants are using only their own original work. The PAGB sets out to give that assurance within its General Conditions (box).

Images must be entirely the work of the Photographer. In composite images, all component images must meet this requirement. For the avoidance of doubt, use of images from any other source including, but not limited to, royalty free image banks and clipart are not permitted.

There is a distinction between the image content, which is controlled by the General Conditions, and image processing and presentation which is at the photographer’s discretion. Processing can utilise techniques such as selection, noise reduction, calculated textures, montage, HDR, focus stacking and many others. Presentation may include keylines, print paper types, print mounting and others.

Photographers who enter PAGB events with images which do not meet the General Conditions are liable to sanctions under the PAGB Breach of Rules Procedure. The Breach of Rules Procedure may also apply to other events such as those with PAGB Patronage.

Image Automation There are now many image processing methods available in camera, or in processing software or in plug-ins for such software, which have been refined or trained by their developers using the characteristics of many images. The list of methods is extremely long with Images must be entirely the work of the Photographer. In composite images, all component images must meet this requirement. For the avoidance of doubt, use of images from any other source including, but not limited to, royalty free image banks and clipart are not permitted. Page 4 of 14, e-news 344 15 November 2023 examples such as face-detection focusing, raw conversion, monochrome conversion, noise reduction, focus stacking, HDR, panorama stitching and many more.

To the extent that these processes are applied only to the photographer’s original image, or to all the photographer’s original images in a composite, then they comply with the PAGB General Conditions.

Image Generation Banks of individual textures and skies have been available for some time and there are software systems which will overlay an imported texture or substitute a sky.

Increasingly there are image generator systems which draw on, or have been developed or trained on, content from large image banks to create new images, via a user prompt or specification.

Any importation, whether manual or automated, of all or part of a single image or of a generated image which includes or has been developed from the work of others, means that the resulting image content is not entirely the work of the photographer. The resulting image then does not comply with the PAGB General Conditions and is not permitted where those conditions apply.

Compliance It is appreciated that the individual photographer may not be fully aware of exactly how individual processing functions act, whether in-camera or in post-processing, However, the PAGB would expect photographers to be aware of when a significant addition has been made to an image which was not part of an original work by the photographer.

Kingswood Salver
Last Saturday saw Steve (Field) chauffeur Rachel (Domleo) and Mike (Martin) down to Bovey Tracey for the Kingswood Salver.

BPS came a commendable but disappointing THIRD.

Rachel had done a fantastic job pulling together the panel below (prints on display in Unit 13) for Mike to print and a huge thank you to all those that contributed to the panel.
Congratulations to Dorchester on their winning panel, we’ll win it back next year.

APPEAL:
We have lots of brilliant photographers in the club.  Whilst Mike has access to the images from our internal competitions, the experience of the recent PAGB Inter Club print battle at Blackburn has highlighted we lack the breadth of coverage outside people / portraits, particularly in mono to reach the top level nationally.  And, despite our strength in Nature, we are reliant upon a few regulars.

So, please review your catalogues: if you have images you are particularly proud of, why not email copies to Mike (mike_martin@blueyonder.co.uk ) to add to the selection pool for future external competitions.

Anyway, back to Kingswood Salver, here is the Panel and individual images.

Trumpet Blowers' Corner
STOP PRESS!
Just as I was about to hit the send button, Sue O'Connell send me the following:

Travel Photographer of the Year 2023: Have just heard that I’ve reached the Finals in this year’s TPOTY, in two categories “Leisure and Adventure” and the “Above, Eye Level and Below”. This is the tenth year I’ve entered and I’ve been a Finalist before, as well as having some awarded images, but it is getting incredibly challenging with tens of thousands of entrants, professional as well as amateur, so I couldn’t be more chuffed.

Salon acceptances: Contrary to popular belief, I do not possess psychic powers and need you to tell me if you've had successes. If you want to blow your own trumpet (or someone else's), then this is the place to do it. Please let me know and I'll include details in a future issue.
