John 2:8 And He said to them, "Draw some out now, and take it to the master of the feast." And they took it.
FOR YOU ... JESUS' MIRACLES
Who knew that a miracle had occurred? Who knew that water had been changed into wine?
Well, let's see. Jesus knew, and the servants who refilled the water pots; maybe the disciples and perhaps Mary. Now you know, after the fact, and so do countless others because the Spirit of God has seen fit to record this event in the Bible for us.
However, on that day, only a handful knew. Could it be clearer that Jesus didn't do this to please His mother or to impress the people who were present or to make a name for Himself? The master of the feast, the head-waiter as we would call him didn't know it had been plain water moments before. He only knew that it was very good wine, better than the vintage served earlier.
Whereas we might have sought to make it a spectacle, Jesus did not. After all, Jesus miracles were not for HIM, but for you, to confirm and prove to you that He is the One who has power to save.
Jesus didn't change water into wine to gain personal notoriety.
+ For Jesus did not come merely to deliver a young couple from a social faux pas and personal embarrassment.
+ Jesus did not change water into wine merely to give his stamp of approval to the use of alcohol at wedding celebrations.
+ Jesus' purpose was not merely to express His support of the God-established estate of marriage.
This miracle and the others served a higher purpose. Jesus miracles served to bear witness to the fact that God the Father was with His Son. They were an effective way of saying: "Hey! Listen up!"
Yes and now that you have witnessed this miracle through the words given to John, may you also learn from it. Learn from this miracle that Jesus is the Son of God. Learn from it to turn to Him when you are in need of help. Learn to return to Him with thanksgiving and praise when you trust you have been delivered from your sin and its punishment, and from every evil.
