Thanks Event Captains
L.A. Works Day was so successful thanks to our dedicated leadership. Long-time L.A. Works leaders, newbies, and 50 Starbucks employees attended a pre-event training, showed up EARLY! on Saturday and brought amazing energy and skills to the leadership team. We cannot thank you all enough!

THANK YOU ALL WHO CAME OUT AND MADE THIS L.A. WORKS DAY GREAT!!!!

On July 30, volunteers from all across Los Angeles joined together to help transform Leimert Park for L.A. Works Day 2011. In celebration of L.A. Works’ 20th anniversary, the nearly 1,000 volunteers painted, planted, created mosaic arts, built drums and added a splash of color across this village. A few special projects included: replacing broken tiles and blank wall space with a new tile mosaic, painting the façade of the World Stage nonprofit organization, painting murals at the 42 Street Elementary School, and laying the foundation for Leimert’s first community garden to transform a vacant lot. Commemorating September 11th
L.A. Works’ September 11th Day of Service volunteer event commemorates the lives and memories of the victims and heroes of 9/11 through civic dialogue and service. On Sunday, September 11, hundreds of veterans and their families, active service members, and community volunteers will come together to revitalize an airplane hanger into a welcoming space for Tomorrow’s Aeronautical Museum (TAM) to use as a community center, interactive children's museum, great hall for Compton city events, and home to its after-school mentoring program called Positive Vibrations.  For MORE >>>

Elected officials join the volunteers
Councilmembers Jan Perry, Eric Garcetti, and Bernard Parks, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, and Rafael Gonzalez from the mayor's office all joined us for L.A. Works Day 2011. By supporting L.A. Works and our volunteers in Leimert Park, these officials have demonstrated the great value that they place on service to the community. We encourage you to send them a note of thanks for their attendance at L.A. Works Day!

  TSA's Big Give
This August, more than one hundred employees from Thomas Saffran and Associates will be renovating a greenhouse area and building a garden for TSA’s annual Big Give volunteer project. The funds that TSA is contributing to L.A. Works for this event will help cover the costs of revitalizing this site adjacent to Andrew Carnegie Middle School to bring it to life as a garden space. In addition, the donation will help support L.A. Works’ ongoing volunteer programming that makes volunteering easy and accessible to the LA community.

Home Depot & Special Musical Guests
Members of the band, 3 Doors Down, will be volunteering along-side Home Depot volunteers at a Los Angeles VFW post this month. Originally from the small town of Escatawpa, Mississippi, 3 Doors Down hit their stride in the early 2000s with a string of post-grunge singles, most notably "Kryptonite," "When I'm Gone," and the ballad "Here Without You." While touring, the band likes to spend their spare time serving the community and volunteering for and with veterans.

Going Back to School
Volunteers from AmWins Group will be at a school in East LA and the Jonathan Club will be at a school in West LA, helping to ready the grounds for the new school year. With the recent LAUSD budget cuts, the schools are under-resourced and extremely appreciative of the extra hands that the L.A. Works volunteers provide in painting, planting, and cleaning the school grounds to get them ready for the students return in September.

A Street Named Conan?
L.A. Works’ team had a thing or two to say in Mayor Villaraigosa's video response to Conan O'Brien's request for a Los Angeles street sign.  You can catch what Angelenos called for in exchange for a street, click HERE >>>
