Wednesday 30 August - Members' Evening
Next Wednesday we are being treated to a series of short talks by BPS members. This is where a number of them share the evening to each do a short presentation of their work. These are photographers who are not used to standing in front of a crowd and who have not presented their work before - so, support them on the evening by turning up and be gentle with them as they will probably be a bit on the nervous side.

The closing date for the first round of the new competition season is almost upon us - Wednesday 6 September is the closing date for Round 1 of the Projected Image Competition, which is being judged by Alan Denison BPE 3*, DPAGB from Frome. Future Meeting
On 20 March next year, we have Jeanette Lendon visiting to talk about SmartPhone photography and how we can extract the best from our mobile devices. To follow this up, she has offered to stay over in Bristol and lead a “SmartPhone Safari” the next day (Thursday 21 March) to practice and develop some of the skills and practices she covers in her talk. The cost would be approx. £30 each depending on numbers interested. If this is something that you might be interested in, please can you let Jay know to see if we have enough interest to make it worth while her doing it.

Cheers

Jay

A TRIP TO SHEPTON MALLET PRISON AND DOWNSIDE ABBEY

I am exploring the opportunity to arrange a trip to the historic Shepton Mallet Prison https://www.sheptonmalletprison.com/ to photograph the interior/exterior. As it is open to the public I have managed to get us exclusive access at the end of the day from 5.00-6.30pm along with general admission from 12.00 noon on the same day. There is a requirement for a minimum of 20 people to attend at a cost of £20 pp.

There is also the opportunity to visit Downside Abbey at Stratton on the Fosse  www.downsideabbey.co.uk on the morning of the same day and entrance is free. I have visited the abbey on several occasions and it is stunning!

I am looking at  dates in mid October probably on a Tuesday or Thursday. If you are interested please let me know either by email mike.hall95@btinternet.com or by text/tel 07765 819640

Thanks

Mike Hall

COMPETITIONS, COMPETITIONS, COMPETITIONS!
Winter is coming, and with that comes the start of a very busy competition season.

INTERNAL PDI COMPETITION – Round 1
Closing date for the first competition 6 September; set theme Macro

KINGSWOOD SALVER
Many of you will be familiar with this competition for a panel of five prints from photographers. Rachel Domleo and Mike Martin are trying to pull together this year’s entry and need your photos. They are currently exploring several topics and are putting a shout out for anyone who has images along the following themes that have not been entered into internal competitions (Mike has copies of those), to please send any to mike_martin@blueyonder.co.uk or racheldomleo@gmail.com for consideration. (WeTransfer can be used if for multiple images if they are too big/too many for your normal eMail provider).

Bird disputes / interactions – pairs of birds against a neutral green background.

City architecture – abstracts – think graphic lines, diagonals, lots of glass

Female portraits – preferably looking at the camera, wearing hats / shawls

PHOTOGRAPHIC SOCIETY OF AMERICA (PSA)
Once again, BPS will be entering the PSA competitions; there are EIGHT in total
  • Three PDI competitions - Colour / Mono / Nature – one image from 6 different authors (max size 1920x1080)
  • Five PRINT competitions - Large Colour (A3), Large Mono (A3), Small Colour (A4), Small Mono (A4) and Creative – one image from 4 different authors.
The above are split into 3 rounds, the closing dates for each are 15 Nov 2023, 15 February 2024 and 15 April 2024. Whilst these sound a long way off, the prints have to be posted to the USA so obviously need to be collated/posted well ahead of the closing date!
Watch out for eMails requesting specific images to make up our entries.

PAGB – INTER CLUB PRINT CHAMPIONSHIP (Mounted Prints – will be returned)
BPS qualified for this as winners of the WCPF Print Competition. Along with Truro we will compete against the top clubs nationally. The competition is held in Blackburn and promises to be a great day; well worth the trip up North.

MASTERS OF PRINT (Un-mounted prints) – not returned after the competition)
As previously mentioned, this is open to INDIVIDUALS to enter. Any entries can also count towards the Club competition (which we won last year) but following the change in rules this year, you won’t get hassled to enter by Steve Field or Mike Martin. You will be responsible for uploading your own high resolution digital copies via the PAGB website/CES system (shout if you need help) but to avoid the hassle and cost of posting individually, a box will be provided in Unit 13 for these to be collected and sent off on your behalf if you wish.

PAGB - GB Cup (PDI) and GB Trophy (Un-mounted Prints – not returned after the competition)
Each of the above has an open section and a nature section making four sections in total. Whilst this is judged early in 2024, the Prints can be delivered earlier at the Inter-Club competition – so selection for our club entry will need to be competed earlier.

WCPF Inter Club PDI Championship (formerly DPIC)
This is held annually in Exeter and is sheduled for Feb 2024. Its one of the highlights of the year. It will be pre-judged so closing date will be early January, with selection of our pool of entries probably during December 2023.

Selection – BPS needs your images
For all the above we will prepare a long/shortlist from images previously entered into internal and external competitions as well as keeping a keen eye on new work entered into internal competitions.
However, if anyone has any images that have been successful in Salons etc, that we may be un-aware of, please feel free to provide small jpg copies (say 1600x1200 max*) to Mike Martin and he’ll happily add to the club selection pool.
*note the new dimensions for PSA PDI competitions above, so if selected you may be requested to provide a larger copy.

Stereoscopy
We have received the following from The Clifton Suspension Bridge Trust:

Denis Pellerin of the Brian May Archive of Stereoscopy will be coming to the bridge to give a talk on Saturday 30 September at 2pm. This will be an interesting and informative look at the history of Victorian photographic techniques, with a focus on the monumental architecture of the time. (There is also to be a workshop on taking stereoscopic images with a smartphone this same afternoon, but details are still tbc.)

There is also a talk coming up with Simon Williams, whose Balloon Fiesta photographs recently made the news – The Beauty and Craft of Early Wetplate Collodion Photography. Tickets are £6 and it consists of a talk and live demonstration on the morning of Sunday 29 October.

We also have a number of pinhole photography workshops with Justin Quinnell on 2 and 3 Sept, which are a tremendously fun way to explore taking unusual images and a nice introduction to the darkroom for folks who are more used to a digital format. Aimed at a slightly more family audience - Adults £18, children over 8 £12.

Apologies again for the intrusion, but it seems awfully silly to be running these photography themed events and not to let the photographers know!

Best,
