Next Wednesday we get the chance to see rising stars of BPS (and some who may already have risen) when a number of Society members present an evening of their own pictures. This always proves to be a highly popular evening, so please come along to support these brave chaps, some of whom will not have stood up in front of an audience before.
|
Next Monday is the monthly meeting of the DI Group. As usual Ashwin will be more than pleased to see you, hopefully either bearing USB sticks or arms full of pictures. The meeting starts at 7.30pm and is open to all members of the Society. As has become the custom on these evenings, Ashwin will have his regular supply of chocky biscuits!
If you haven't already done so, please complete your DI Group questionnaire and return it to Ashwin as soon as possible. If you've lost your copy, you can download another one here.

Any Old Bowens Monolite Accessories In Your Loft?
|
The club has two old style Bowens Monolites but needs reflectors so we can use them with the new overhead gantry system. These lights have been donated by members in the past and we wondered if anyone has any old Bowens accessories tucked away that they might be willing to make available to the club. If so please email nick@acuma.tv.
|
For those of you who haven't already picked up yours yet, you can find copies just inside the door to the clubroom. Please pick up yours (and tick your name off the list); this will save postage costs when Derwood comes to sending out any which have not been collected by the end of September.

I have received the following from Graham Reeves following his sponsored trek up (and down) the 3 peaks in Yorkshire
A VERY BIG THANK YOU
Thank all of you who contributed to my Alzheimers
walk.
I completed the walk inside the set time with a bit to
spare. This was not up to my own expectations because of cramp again; but people
were still coming down several hours later.
Lucky with the weather which was mainly perfect but a heavy hailstorm
and a drenching at the top of the final climb before I could get my wet weather
gear on added to the rigours of the event.
Another big thanks to Stephen Newman who unfortunately was
unable to walk on the day. He arrived at the water points to give encouragement
and check that I was drinking enough and keeping my carbohydrate intake up.
I've had to promise my wife that I won`t do any more events so that`s the
end
Graham

PSA Interclub Creative Competition
|
Some of you may remember that in the dim and distant past, BPS took part in the PSA Interclub Creative Competition. For one reason or another (a mixture of the previous organiser having to step down owing to ill health and the PSA's continued inability to organise a booze up in the proverbial) I have only just received the results of the last round although they have still failed to provide an updated league table so we have no idea where we stand. Two of our images received awards, Val Duncan an HM for her image An Alien Romance and a medal for Bob Faris with Flirting With Lucifer; both of these are reproduced below:

We have heard from a past BPS member, John Gray who left Bristol many years ago to move to Cardiff that he has sadly been diagnosed with an aggressive form of liver cancer for which there is no treatment. There will be a number of BPS members who remember John who might like to contact him, he can be reached on 02920 755872 and would love to hear from his old friends.

I have recieved the following from Sue O'Connell, which is self expanatory:
This photo is not meant for Blowing Your Own Trumpet really. It's more
about encouraging BPS members to "give it a go". After all, my successful shot
was a bit of a wild card which I only entered at the last minute because I was
short of monochrome images. It seemed very much a colour image but I thought it
might just work in mono. According to the organiser, it was the fact that it was
that bit different that the judges liked. So there you have it, runner-up to the
work of a pro photographer! Exposure at the Royal Geographic Society. Proud or
what?? And if any members attend the exhibition, they'll find a (much deserved)
credit to the BPS for support and encouragement.
Anyone interested can
find all the winning 2014 images at the TPOTY site www.tpoty.com. There is also a BBC feature
"Travel Photographer of the Year: What was the best?" which has judges' comments
on all the winners and runners up. http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/magazine-33682404
Categories and rules for the 2015 competition can be found at tpoty.com. The closing date isn't until 1 October so my advice is to give it a go!
